Okay, I gotta ask since the whole con side of the fandom is beyond foreign to me: was this an actual additional event or just an inside joke? :o

Cannot say if the event is real or not. But there is a very old tradition in SciFi and Furry (which derived much from scifi) fandoms to jokingly call any gathering of people a 'con'. And to to add what they were doing to the name. Thus you have Xboxcon, Boozecon, Movingacrosscountrycon, etc etc. These are not actually conventions, but are little private jokes the people involved share amongst themselves. Usually it defines a singular event and place and only those present know what happened there. In Furry, we also have the unique event of PAFCON, which is the fake convention created for the TV show CSI. I cannot name another convention being filmed for a TV show that doesn't actually exist. You can still see PAFCON shirts at various conventions, and folks who have been in furry awhile still chuckle at them.

But on occasion things grow out of hand. Consider MFM -- it started out as a pizza party in a hotel room, and the very next year had 270 people attending. A gather CAN turn into an actual convention if there is enough demand for one in the local area and you have some people who have experience running a convention.

I figured it was more of an inside joke. Don't think a con full of drunk fursuiting would be comfortable :P
