"Alright, Spike, start taking notes.
Artifact study number 65, session 2.
Item was recovered near the Crystal Kingdom 2 weeks ago. Radiates magical energy, unknown kind, but harmless according to session 1 results. Session 2 will attempt to determine the nature of material and energy signature.
Material is cold and smooth to the touch. First thought to be mineral in nature, but appears to be organic on closer inspection, similar to bone or horn tissue.
Wait. I detect energy fluctuations... Weak but regular, akin to a heartbeat. This is weird... I'm pretty sure I've never seen this thing before, and yet the magic feels... familiar..."
"Twilight, are you alright ?"
"Is it me or did it just get c-cold in here ?"
There was so much unused potential in the Crystal Kingdom plot, it made my inner writer weep. King Sombra was a potentially awesome villain, but like many MLP villains, never made it past "bad guy of the episode" status.
And every potential plot hook from the episode, like Twilight using dark magic (twice !), or Sombra's remaining horn, are just never mentioned again - what we get instead is some insipid plot about Olympic Games in the Crystal Kingdom.
Argh.
Anyway, today's warm-up sketch was supposed to be an anthro King Sombra, but I and my muse got sidetracked. Oh well, there's always a next time ^^

I agree.
He had a lot of potential that was not close to realized.
I would love a Justice League-esque overarching plot. Or even a Teen Titans-esque, where the season premiere's two parter, a mid-season episode, and a two part season finale deal with one villian.
Anyway, this looks great.
Twilight's wing's look good, although with Sombra behind her like that, the right of Twilight Sparkle looks very busy. Perhaps it's the lack of color, but for a moment I thought they were Sombra's wings.
Still, her expression is priceless.

I'm not asking for an overarching plot, just a villain who actually survives the episode (s)he's introduced in and reappears later. Preferably not to be reformed into a productive member of the pony society. I guess Sombra's potential wasting is par for the course, what with the writing quality nosediving in Season 3.
And about the sketch, you're right. For some reason Twi's wings appear lighter than the rest of her body, hence the confusion. I'll probably lineart and color this one later ^^

Yes. Season 3 took a hit. I feel like even the Season Premier of Season 3 could have been the ponies taking the battle to Chrysalis, or hunting her down and bringing her to justice, or... something...
I would look forward to seeing it linearted. I didn't want you to think I thought this was a bad pic or anything. And color would no doubt help (purple wings go with purple body.)

YAY MUSES!
I agree, Sombra had a lot of potential, and it's a shame that all he actually does is charge the crystal castle once. I mean, I know it's a bit much to expect an epic fight to occur, but still, one can only wonder if they could have done more with him?
Who knows. Maybe we'll see him again? I mean, sure he a'sploded, but it's a world of magical talking technicolor ponies, sooo yeah. XD
