I've heard the same thing, but ironically, in my drawing 2 class in college my professor actually gave us a mechanical pencil (better quality than the cheap bic ones I use now) and had us use that to learn how to shade without using the sides of the pencil. I always preferred them because I like having a sharp point to do my work with XD
Honestly, with practice, anyone can make beautiful art with any material.
