Yeey finally got my hands on some scratchboard! Super difficult to find and this one's not the best quality but will do for now, didn't want to spend tons of money on it yet without some experimenting. Hopefully will get to buy some even better ones later.
Just wanted to try this technique after a long long time, last time I used scratchboard I was doing those ready-made pictures as a kid haha. But this was lots of fun! Lovely technique ^^ had to learn a lot again as I worked my way through the picture but was nice.
This portrait of a snow leopard is referenced from a photo I took myself. Hopefully not too wonky or uneven colours, tried to make it look a bit better in PS though.
Hope you like it anyway! I really liked working on it. Been doing it during this week every now and again while working on my final assignments.
Drawn on a ~8x10" scratchboard. Only used one size tool (from those ready made packs) that I had lying around somewhere, might need to get some different sizes later if I make more of these!

OOh haven't heard about that website before. I got mine from dickblick, was a cheaper brand than Ampersand. Will try that one next though! Problem is that the shipping is super expensive, I paid only a few dollars for these but the shipping was atrocious to EU/UK x_x and in local art places/websites here the price of the scratchboard itself seemed to be pretty huge haha. But will definitely look into that website once I need more, thanks for the link!
Thanks! It's like a board (thicker than "normal" paper I mean but not necessarily like cardboard etc.), that can be any colour but normally white. Then it's coated with this black layer and as you scratch the black surface off it reveals the white beneath it. It's an interesting way of 'drawing' for sure, and can't use eraser or anything so a bit tricky too. XD Once it's scratched that's it and can't go back. I put a little wip on tumblr earlier http://lhuin.tumblr.com/image/49811315559 , it's just sort of forming the shape of the subject with the scratches.
But for some reason I find it a very relaxing technique haha, it's not exactly like drawing but more like *hairhairhairhairhairhair* with only 1 tool XD (or can have more but I got only 1)

That's amazing! :D I can imagine that it is a comfortable technique, I use the erase-from-dark technique already when shading.
Is it possible to do a sketch before starting the scratching? Because I can just imagine my stuff being all lopsided and wrong without a pre-sketch xD

Yeah! you can draw on the black board quite easily! Might depend on the brand but on the one I have it's a bit difficult to erase the pencil (made it a bit smudgy) so I just smudged it away with my finger XD but yeah it's like matte-ish so you're able to sketch on it with a pencil/pen :D I definitely needed some sketching too yea haha XD
Thanks! 8D that was the most difficult part for me too, I think I just made it like lots of tiny lines and cross hatching so it appears greyish and quite even. I think some people would use something like this too http://i-cdn.apartmenttherapy.com/u.....-steelwool.jpg but I didn't have anything like that
Hmm. Scratchboards. Heard of them a few times, admittedly never seen one. I'd be scared witless of screwing it up and would most likely keep it in a closet for years.
Do those things smudge too? I mean...they are based on ink so I would think not, but then again you're also applying mechanical force on those things.

That's remarkable! Great job! I love using scratch board, and I found that an exacto knife tip works wonders for the fine little fur textures. Also, it's fun doing some watercolor washes in areas to play with color. The paper or clay board will pic up the pigment really well.
