"My first view of the quicksand pit. The slow movement of the ripples and highlights on the surface, moved by the lingering life of the temple's abandoned god. The shadows cast by the pillars on the far side, smaller than the monstrous cylinders behind me but still impressive.
I'm tempted to say that the sight of it held me like a bird caught hypnotically by the great green eye of a snake... which I wasn't, but it would have sounded good."
