Years ago, I doodled on a couple of blank VHS slip covers before I mailed the tapes to somebody or other. I scanned them first, but on a very primitive device ... and made very small files as well. Since I have been getting little art finished lately, I thought I'd throw these at the FA audience as a stop gap ... and then ended up spending an hour restoring the two "volumes." You may recognize some of the targets of my spoofing, but even if it only seems generic too you, it's still apt, I think. Of course ... cartoons have changed since the late 1990s ... now I'd probably have to spoof Squidbillies and ponies.

There are bound to be exceptions, but I thought '90s cars better than those through most of th e'80s, which were angular, squarish and basically all alike under the trimmings. Around 1988 or '89, some curves began to appear in design again, and things like the Viper, Audi TT, the new Beetle, the PT Cruiser, etc. broke the old Fox and K-car molds.
I think you have 'common sense, good citizenship and general decency' confused with 'materialism, violence for the sake of violence and re-encouraging harmful gender stereotypes'. As far as 'politically correct brainwashing' goes, if teaching kids that friendship comes in many varieties and that we should be open minded and accepting of others no matter who or what they are AS WELL AS sell toys makes todays cartoons 'worse' than the ones in the 80's that were just meant to be 20 minute toy commercials, then I say "Let cartoons continue the downward slide".
Personally, I think some people need to ditch the rose colored nostalgia glasses and realize that most of the cartoons we grew up with in the 80's were absolute garbage.

I agree, wholeheartedly with your last sentence.
Cartoons should be about fun. Not trying to instill something like morals, that SHOULD be taught in the home, and not by some federal or state thinktank.
I didnt need a cartoon guru to tell me making fun of folks who are different is wrong, I saw it in daily life.
We are mistaken in that we feel to need to overvalue everything a child watches, or analyse kids who pick up sticks and shout "bang bang bang! " Most children with intact families, or even single parent families know violence is wrong, but a child need not be labled a miscreant for playing cops n robbers.....

I don't have a problem with cartoons telling kids things like 'don't make fun of people who are different' instead of 'buy this shit'. I just think it's sad that more parent's don't seem to take it upon themselves to tell corporations like Hasbro things like 'More stuff like MLP:FiM because it has a damn good message" or take the time to watch it with their kids.
The point is, there's nothing wrong with positive reencouragement. There's nothing wrong with wanting television to be something more than vapid entertainment. I don't know about you, but i'd kinda like to know that the people in society around me were watching things that made them smarter, not dumber.

I agree on the 30 minute tv commercial cartoons, they suck. But kids need silly fun.
It would be great if parents would enjoy shows of value with their kids, but the tv is an ersatz babysitter, and most folks dont even care there are channel restriction features on their tvs.
Messages are fine, but I dont believe they should be the point.
I would love to see more valuable content on tv, but folks like crap like jersy shore and honey booboo. As long as the public displays an appetite for feces, that is what the programmers will continue to feed them.
I dont watch most commercial television. I love to learn. I guess that makes you and I a distinct minority.

That's why I like shows like Gravity Falls, MLP:FiM, and Regular Show. There are a lot of good things in there to learn without it being preachy and there's a lot of silliness in there, too. It's not like these shows hit people over the head with it but at the same time, what else is there to write about BUT something that has some sort of lesson?
That's all life -is-. Lessons. Everything that happens to us in life teaches us something, whether it's about ourselves or about the world around us, so saying that shows shouldn't teach things is kinda silly. They're going to, whether someone wants them to or not and the fact is that i'd much rather have my fellow human beings put thought into the things they create and think about how those creations are going to affect others.

If you consider teaching lessons like "help old folks with their groceries" "be a good neighbor" and "one good action is better then ten good intentions" to be violence, materialism and harmful gender stereotypes then yeah, I guess the cartoon morals from the 80s weren't all that good.
But hey, we've all got our own concept of good and bad.
Personally, I think some people need to ditch the rose colored nostalgia glasses and realize that most of the cartoons we grew up with in the 80's were absolute garbage.
Yeah, cartoons like Tiny Toons, Transformers, Battle of the Planets, Bucky O'Hare, Danger Mouse, Dungeons & Dragons, GI Joe and Rescue Rangers were garbage - the modern flash stuff flooding the air waves is *way* better.
Not.

You all act like everything is black and white. Like, 'all' cartoons from the 80's are awesome, and 'all' cartoons now suck...LOTS of episodes of transformers, GI JOE etc were crap. That doesn't mean all of them were, and sorry but MLP:FiM is a pretty damn good show overall and anyone who can't see why is a moron. Gravity Falls is another great example of a damn good show overall.
So yeah, saying the 80's was so super and everything now sucks is dumb, just like saying anything having to do with the old days is better than now. People wo say that kind of thing just sound like angry, butter cynical old people and if all you're gonna do is be old and hate on new things because it reminds you of your mortality then I dunno what to tell you, enjoy your self-wrought misery I guess.

Notice how that pretty much sums up your initial post? You sort of lost your moral authority when your first post was exactly what you accused others of doing.
Every decade has it's pros and cons and everyone has their own tastes - if you prefer flash animation that brain washes kids into believing that global warming will destroy us all and meat is murder, that's fine, that's what you like, but that doesn't mean what everyone else likes sucks.

Gravity Falls is hand drawn.
"Although his famous student short was a Flash-animated project, Hirsch decided to go the traditional hand-drawn route for the Disney Channel series.
“There was some talk in the beginning whether we should do it in Flash or not,” he says. “I’m not an anti-Flash guy. But for the type of animation we wanted to do, hand-drawn was the way to go. The boards are done here [at Disney TV Animation studio in Glendale, Calif.] and the rest of the production is handled by Rough Draft and Emation Digital in Korea.”

Rock & Bullwinkle were similar to Family Guy in that respect, but there all resemblance ends, I think. There was none of the grossness and nasty-mindedness of Seth McFarlane, and Family Guy lacks the rampant word-play. Also, while the main characters of R&B were silly, they were nice, likable people mostly. You could even feel sorry for Boris & Natasha. I intensely dislike Peter Griffon, and mildly dislike almost everyone else in Family Guy. I feel sorry for Meg and would love to see the episode where she finally poisons her awful family ... though I guess Chris isn't actually a bad sort, just dumb as they come.
Saara, Taral, et al...
These make me ashamed of my own art. I've been posting on DevArt and InkBunny, but now you made me ashamed. You generally take a day to craft one of your pieces, but these look like they were dashed off while waiting for your order from the cafe waitress !
