Barn Owl With Roses - Leather Archery Arm Guard
This arm guard was a commission for a client who loves barn owls and white roses. Roses are something I haven't tooled on leather yet, and it was quite fun to do. :3
Hand-tooled from 7-oz. leather. Unlike my previous arm guards, this one has a bit of acrylic paint, since the leather itself wasn't light enough for the owl. The background itself is dyed.

I made sure to varnish this enough to resist damage from the friction from the bowstring. Of course, over time it likely will become worn, but that's what arm guards are designed for :3 I try not to use acrylic for the reason that acrylic rests on top of the leather, whereas dye soaks in, so if it gets scraped, the color will remain with dye. However, I discussed that I would have to use paint for the white of the owl with the client and she was fine with that.
I love how you finished the edges. To me, you can tell the people who know what they are doing in leather working when there are clean/beveled edges and not straight cut pieces. I have used acrylic on leather before and it holds up well, though not for archery...so I can see that being somewhat of a problem with wear over time.
Still, this is a beautiful piece!
