You can laugh is you like but this 79 Toy has over 600,000 miles, how much over that I don't know the speedo has been broken for the last eight years I think it is... So it's likely there are over 700,000 miles on it. I got it when it had 169,000 miles on it when it was about Six years old.
I made the bed and box for hauling dogs and stuff... One of these days I need to get a new grill... deer are hard on grills and the front of trucks... I'm just glad I was not in a low slung car when it happened... The deer would have been in the car!

I had an older Subie too and it was my work car till my ex killed the motor in it... Dad wanted "his" daughters to be able to fix their own stuff... I had grease and dirt under my nails most of the time growing up and I'm very glad Dad shared that with me! I look at my half sisters and they have not amounted to a whole lot... So I ended up being a dyke so what? I enjoy being a gearhead and building and making things.
Nice! I'm thinking of getting a Ford Model A for my first car (yes, as a daily driver). They get pretty decent fuel mileage, you can still get parts for them (new parts, too), and I don't think there's much that could go wrong with a Model A that I can't fix. I even heard of a guy in Michigan who drove a 1930 Model A as a daily driver for a year. He only got left on the roadside two or three times, always because of electrical problems (which are my strong suit, but unfortunately not his).
What do you think?

The model A was a simple car and there are things that you can do to them to make them safer to travel in. The old flat head can be improved on when it come to an engine.
If the car is all there I would run it till it drops. A good replacement would be a Toyota 20 R or the Pinto motor You can get all kinds of stuff for them. Set the thing up to run a 12 volt system.

That's why I like the Model A. Henry Ford always said that anything extra on a car was just something extra to break down, and I've found that to be true--especially with the 1994 GMC Safari we used to have, which my Dad got rid of in December, much to my dismay. I'd hoped it would become mine, but since I like fixing things myself, it would've probably driven me nuts. About the only practical way to do any major engine work (such as replacing the water pump, which we had to have done several times) was to put the van up on the rack and drop the engine out from underneath!
As for the Model A I plan to get, I've been thinking of installing a supercharger on the engine. That engine could push the car up to about 60-65 mph without a blower, and I figured a manually-controlled supercharger would be good for those times when I pull out into the road and see some nut charging along towards me at twice the speed limit. Turn the supercharger on, step on the gas, and away I'd go!
But what do you mean by "if the car is all there"?

I'll say right now DON'T the bottom end will not take the stress a supercharger would out on that engine. A guy builds what he calls the Freeway Flier I would look into that before I did anything to the engine. I know he reworks the block for shell bearings and does something with the oil system and shaves the head. I know one of the guys here has had it done to his A engine and the car has lots of pep
Okay now I'm going to jump on your ass... You said you wanted the Model A because it was SIMPLE then why are you making it complex by adding shit to it? If you want speed don't get the damn A get something else if you want anything over 45 to 55 mph. That Model As body is not designed to be pushed at high speeds to start with. Keep it simple and keep it reliable as you can make it.

Thank you for the advice. The simplicity alone isn't the main reason why I want a Model A--it's because there's almost nothing that could break down about an A that I can't fix. But I also want to be able to drive it on the freeway without having to floor it just to keep up in the slow lane. In other words, if I need to pass someone, I want to be able to. Like those big huge smelly trucks, which you've surely found yourself behind once or twice.
I hope I haven't been bothering you with all these long comments, by the way. It is very nice to talk to a fellow cougar, if you call this talking.
Thanks again. I will go and Google that Freeway Flier thing--it sounds interesting.
By "bottom end" I assume you meant the differential and such?

Picture of my Old Toy http://www.furaffinity.net/view/24483073/ Still running about with Toy since my primary and backup are both Toyotas a Camry and Vibe. The Camry has been out to Denver a few times though driving into the mountains is probably one of the few times I wished for a V6
