HaD: Horses and Dragons
Reptile – The Score
Volume VIII: “Heroes And Darkness”
Composed by Patrick Reichel
Track 10: “Horses and Dragons”
Who said dragons would make bad mounts?
This was quite a project… but I’m really satisfied with the result. It’s my 10th track from the current album… so it had to be something special and exclusive. ^^
I imagined the following scenes, because this track is highly “situative”:
At first, the army of AKTES and King Kyle are gathering… mounting their horses and then riding heroically over the lands. That would be the first part of three.
In the second part (everything is edited in this track) the army would discover a forgotten cave… inhabited by dragons! The cave needed some “ambient” music, this is the second part.
In the third and last part, the heroes discover that the dragons can be mounted, too… and so they are flying away over the fields of glory! ^^
I wanted to practice four new aspects in this song:
+ Different rhythms and change in styles
+ Tempo and volume variations
+ Real sounds (such as my “hissing” and breathing) combined with the symphonic sounds
+ less choir (doesn’t sound so well)
Enjoy!!!
Media Used:
ALESIS USB-Keyboard, YAMAHA PSR-1000-Keyboard, ABLETON LIVE 8.2, MIROSLAV Philharmonik, Microphone, ALESIS Equalizer and mixing console
Working Time:
about 12 hours
DEDICATED to the composer Alan Silvestri
Composed and performed by Patrick Reichel aka
reptilecynrik
NOTES:
I suggest you download the track and enjoy the Mp3 from your computer. This usually sounds better than just listening it here directly... and you can keep it for later. ^^
*This song contains small cues from computer games and movie soundtracks. The second “riding rhythm” (starting at 3:00) was adapted from “The Mummy Returns” by Alan Silvestri (Track: “Sandcastles”) – one of my favourite composers.
EDIT:
I've deleted a few voices from the choir in the final section.

wow dude... i've seen your art for ages and just recently began watching you... but DAMN, a musician as well?
on to the song, very well composed and thought out, the "cave" part as a little unclear as to the beginning, however i spotted the second riding part the moment it came in, i also love The Mummy trilogy (too bad they couldn't get Eve back for the last one)
last note, i couldn't really hear any of the breathing/hissing you mentioned in the description but knowing me i just missed it XD

This is nothing personal now (because I loved your comment): I always find this highly amusing, that... people watch my stuff for a long time and never stumbled upon my MUSIC - which is also in my gallery!
XD
But hey, you're right... most people watch and KNOW me for my visial art, yepp! ^__^"
I'm truely glad you enjoy this one and that you also appreciate my "other side"... I mean, that I'm also a musical artist. Yeah!
Being an ART TEACHER and MUSIC TEACHER has its values.
Eh?
The beginning of the cave is when the wooden stick and breathing starts. Sure, maybe... some other kind of intro would've worked better... or differently.
About the "breathing and hissing" aspect:
I'm talking about the part 02:25-02:54
in this section, you can hear a (slightly equalized and synthetizised) voice... which is kinda "breezing" into the microphone. Also, the wind in the background... blowing. These are both MY own voices!
I've created these sound effects with my own voice!
^__^
And the fact that you didn't spot it at first, is good... this means, I integrated them very well!!!! :D

well hey, now i know you're a musician (teacher too? wow) i'll be keying a huge eye out for the rest of your stuff, in fact i'll be looking for the previous 9 tracks the moment i've posted this. Being a musician myself (however bad of one) this is the kind of art i can truly talk about, not that your drawings are bad, hell man they're top notch stuff.
ah, i see now, very clever, and indeed, you did integrate it well, also doubt i would have spotted the other transition as vividly if you hadn't mentioned the likeness to that one track from The Mummy Returns, that's one of my favorite tracks in that film too XD

You can find all tracks here, but also (in correct and easy-to-find-order) here:

This is not my entire creation... I've created so much more, which is NOT submitted to FA! You can find all my music here;

(MIDI and MP3 files)
Yeah, and... I'm sure I had to mention "The Mummy Returns"; because this cue is really reconizable!

I really like the beginning here! Very good uses of the percussion section, really works well together! The strings are mixed very well also; they don't fight with the percussion in terms of volume, and the when the brass come in they really fill the space! I hear that you did lower the percussion levels a bit in the section of the brass in comparison with the little clips you sent me, which I feel was the best move. With the percussion not as prominent as before the melody can stand strong while the background support does a good job complimenting the motion the piece takes.
The only criticism I can really offer with this piece would be the vocals again, but it's very hard to give advice on creating realistic vocals with VSTs. I haven't had the chance to really look into this, but I'm definitely going to try and figure out some ways to help them sound much better!
Some ideas I have but haven't tested include:
1. making multiple tracks of the vocals and then altering them slightly to sound fuller
2. finding some way to stagger the transitions between notes just slightly so it sounds more natural as opposed to everyone hitting each note at exactly the same time (this would most likely use the multiple tracks from before, with some editing in the piano roll)
3. seeing if one could mix the transitions to have the VST bend the notes to the next one, as to create a sound of a voice transitioning from low to high in one breath.
I'm going to see what I can do about testing these in the near future once I get my vocal VSTs installed and get back to you on them!
Great work on this piece, keep it up! ^_^

Hello, buddy.
Your comment was/is the most important one to me - after all, I've learned so much from you. ^__^
I wanted to get out of my "comfort zone", without throwing my own beloved style away. I hope, this was a success in some parts of the song.
Yes, choirs are a bitch... in fact, it sounds better in the original WAV-file (as you can surely imagine). Maybe, I am GOING TO SING THE STUFF MYSELF next time!!!! XD
Multiplying my voice to create a choir... such as Peter Hollans:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSLPH9d-jsI
(looooooooooove this one!!!!)
Thanks for your comment about my "percussive use". I haven't used it this way before... I was tired of doing copy-past styles and I think it worked out!
AND yes, I lowered the volume in some parts right after your suggestion. It was indeed a good choice! :3
And I will also try the ideas for the choir... creating multiple layers (channels) and then mixing them.
BUT: I love choirs... though I am also proud to have lowered their dominance here. It's just more natural, if the human voices do NOT song the entire melody... agreed?

exactly, unless you plan on having recordings of real voices then don't try to have a melody in the vocal tracks :P
And this is a pretty cool piece as well! This is actually how they did the real recording for skyrim's heme as well! The entire chorus was just multiple recordings of the same small choir!
I'm considering giving it a try myself, though currently none of my present ideas require vocal tracks. I'll see about getting you a sample by the end of the day or tomorrow!

Wow Patrick! you really made a good job by starting the music with a silent beggining, which it has a nice rhythm on it, into a strong and epic theme!
If you wanna know what did I imagine, was something like if some of your characters were riding in horses but one of them is trying to see if he can ride a real dragon. At the beggining, is having some difficulty to tame it, which is where the music that express complicated scene. And thepart where you put the main theme that you show us before, is the part when your character manage in controling the dragon and having a nice view from the skies ^ ^
The music is great man, and I can notice those little changes that you mentioned, which makes this different from what you have done before :D

Thank you, my friend!!
I've tried to add some changes in style and thematic composition, this was very important to me. I wanted to get out of my "comfort zone", without throwing my own beloved style away. This is quite hard.
^^"
Hey, your imaginations are quite correct!!!!!!! ^^

Well guess what, it´s going according to your plan, I did felt this one a bit different from the others. It gives a dramatic and an emotional feeling according to the them, with a proper beginning with its characteristics, the links between two different rhythms are well maded and the rest is already written on the previews comment XD
Well, I dont hear a big change in your style thinking in your previous music jobs. I hear here a clear change of rhythms. I feel that the percussion is the ...centre in this piece but sometimes without power. Like always i think your are master creating atmospheres with the strings and orchestral sounds, but the chorus sound a bit disonant, meaning some hard maybe. I like use the own voice to create breath and others effects... bravo for those man. Silvestri is without dude a great composer.
Well, it's good that you don't hear a BIG difference... because this still IS a part of the current album and no break from it.
^^
But I've added some small things here and there, yepp.
The percussion is more realistic, because I don't just use simple patterns and copy-paste it anymore. ^^
Yes, the force... my sounds are not that great and sometimes they lack "power". I'm working on this!
And I shall continue to work on the choir. Thank you!!!!!
Btw... the next project will be your ALBUM COVER... though I am super busy with school right now!
XD

Yep, I understand that the sound is not so different from the rest of the album. (I've heard everything you have in soundcloud), it makes sense. Some artists, especially those of progressive music, often mix different styles into one album. The project I'm working on is one of those. The melodies will be varied, but the overall context will be music inspired by fantasy or fantastic characters.
On the cover, do not worry, relax, work calmly and especially hope you enjoy doing, Like me making the album.
Last month I moved from an apartment to a larger house in the same city. And I'm renovating one of their rooms like a recording studio. I'm still at the stage of sound checks and softwares. So We have time :)
