what happens when a dumb girl with mediocre zbrush skills gets a hold of a 3D printer...
THIS :D
final result from this sculpt: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10498295/ although it has been highly adjusted and tweaked (two newer models are seen in the middle, one customized)
sadly those two sharks in the middle printed at 3.5 inches tall instead of 4, which does make a lot of difference in the detailing but regardless I'm still quite happy with them :)
The Vixen being shown is actually for sale, and once I tweak a few bugs and try to fix this really annoying error that recently has plagued my printer, i will be doing custom commissions :) but i don't have many details for that yet, but when i do there will be a journal posted. right now there are many questions i cannot answer or don't have a clear estimate for.
THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS...
PS: Beige photographs really badly (basic print material color) but i also have white and orange...

id loove to do a hawk! feathers may be challenging, wings definitely either have to be thick-ish, or folded, otherwise they'll be pretty fragile!
I used these tutorials to really understand the basics of zbrush. it's a pretty easy program to learn, but the UI is really really confusing.. however with enough patience and practice it's SUPER user-friendly and easy to pick up. :D
http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/ i hope it comes in handy!

it prints it in layers, kinda like a big glorified hot glue gun :P
heres a time lapse of one printing (not of the model i have though but the best vid i could get showing how they print) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uII9-29U_oQ

The cost of the machine varies from model to model. Look up reprap. Some of the cheaper ones are $500ish dollars, ranging up to $2k for larger ones which are extremely solid. This isn't exactly a case of "you get what you pay for", quality is similar on all models, but size is definitely a factor as well as issues such as heating elements for melting the materials you work with, what kind of materials they can use, and swappable parts (a plastic printing head versus a metal printing head, for example).
Material also varies widely based on the machine, thickness, quality, and type. Some machines (rarely) take pellets instead of the usual spool of plastic. Some use thicker lines than others. Prices can vary from as low as $50 for a spool to $300 for a spool, but that price varies too based on quality, thickness, material, and the length of the spool. A friend of mine says his doesn't go through a spool very fast, but if you print a lot or run into errors with your print (like the base of the figurine comes loose during printing and the whole thing gets ruined half way through) it adds up fast.

Keep in mind building size is also quite limited. These printers can't do anything larger than certain dimensions, and the largest I know of is a cubic foot. Anything bigger would probably require a much larger, much more expensive machine that does CNC (selectively carving away bits of a material to make something, arguably the cheapest option) or SLS (selective laser sintering, basically burning plastic powder layer by layer to make pieces. It's very high detail as well, but omg the prices...).
My goal in life is to afford an SLS machine for my garage. It would be smarter to buy a car at that price, but fuck cars I can print myself a bike with that!

i definitely considered printing out my own 40k army XD the possibilities are endless!!
however 40k models are so ridiculously detailed, i have yet to see a 3d printer that can get the accuracy you see from injection molding. but for custom stuff like a destroyed vehicle.. it could be soo cool!

I'm actually sending the two sharks in the middle pic to
finir who is a super talented painter!! I tried painting a shark and... i.. i am so bad at painting that i just wanna cry XD so i airbrushed it a solid color in defeat. HOWEVER these are very much paintable which is why I can't wait to get some really nice examples of painted sculpts :)

Oh I love Finir's painting skills! My mate is really good at painting as well, and I try some but I get frustrated. He and I both paint Warhammer minis like Finir (not quite as high quality, but still great). Cannot wait to see what else you bring to the table, so to speak :)
thanks! the shark is 4 inches tall, and the fox is about 5 inches long (from feet to tail), it really all depends on the amount of material used :) for the amount of material these use, and other static factors, I'd say it's gonna cost between 80-100. i wish it could be lower but sadly at this time i can't make it any lower =(
i don't think creating anything custom will cost too much extra, i'm really doing this all out of fun/needed 3D practice ^^ i'm going to be making some base poses and stuff that people can choose from to get customized to be their character, but of course if someone wants a totally custom pose i can do that too =) it's tough to get a more exact estimate at this time but i will hopefully have one soon
people of course can also simply send me the model files they have created and i can print them out.

thanks! yeah, i REALLY wanted the price to be a lot lower, was hoping for $60 but unfortunately i have to compensate for the material cost, and the risk of prints getting errors/messing up. I'm not getting a profit out of this, all of the money earned is helping my dad, i'm doing it out of fun ^_^
I just wish the price could reflect that x)

i'm using the dimension 1200es... if he's looking for a printer that won't totally destroy your wallets i recommend this one!!! http://cubify.com/cubex/ really awesome.
I use Zbrush :) although I also love Maya.. sadly i don't have any good maya tutorials for you but i do have some zbrush ones that help go over the fundamentals of 3D

I disagree with this entire statement
"what happens when a dumb girl with mediocre zbrush skills gets a hold of a 3D printer..."
1.) your not dumb :P
2.) mediocre my ass, i went to offical college classes to make 3d models and design games and these look better then alot of the stuff iv done
Anyways good job ^.^ I was wounder when some one I "knew" was going to get their hands on a 3d printer and do this, was kinda hoping it would be me but college is killing my wallet atm -.-

Looked it up online, I'm familiar with the style of printer, I've worked in a few engineering shops which employ them. 30k isn't overly that much really, I regularly work with half million dollar CNC machines, and run a business, so I ask out of professional interest. Currently I get my 3d prototyping done through shapeways.com (as their resolution is acceptable and the price isn't overly bad) but considering my work/experience/familiarity with SolidWorks and the growing interest in this country with 3D prototyping, I'm considering a purchase. 0.3mm resolution, ABS plastic, and multi color ability, along with 'open file/print' simplicity is quite provocative.
With a printer like that, you're going to be able to offer some serious character modeling commissions, I predicted this was going to happen 5 years ago when the first 3D printers started coming out.

My dad was the one that purchased it, and it simply came down to that he had done work for the company and they had given him a pretty hefty discount. I don't know anything else about it other than that he and a business partner had split it 50/50 for an up-and-coming business.
I couldn't find many other printers that printed ABS plastic with high accuracy, most printers I see are resin or PLA which is not as durable. :P and that's soo cool!! I hope you are able to post some 3D prints, i'd love to see them some time :)

Oh I see. Well, awesome. I was looking at the Gigabot project because the print area is so huge, with pretty decent resolution too, but I missed their kickstarter by like 3 days...

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with too

Ah those prints look sooo damn awesome!!! The stratasys machines really put out high quality prints! Just wish their cartridges weren't so crazily expensive... always stopped me from printing lots of stuff while I had access to em at uni. I use much lower end machines now but they're not tooo bad.
