There is a few flaws in your reasoning. For the gun, faster to explain, a bow is quieter and you can reuse the arrows.
As for the crossbow, a skilled bowman can fire faster than a crossbow man, and since it takes more skill people are more likely to become a truly skilled with it. And a more skilled bowman is more likely to survive.

A truly skilled bowman takes years or even decades to learn their triad. A crossbowman can be trained to be component in mere days to weeks.
Yes a bowman can fire faster but they are rarely accrete when speed firing and they can only keep it up for mere minuets before tiring. A true bowman takes as long to fire as a component crossbowman. In most battles a bowman and crossbowman shot about the same amount of ammunition as you did not want to wast your limited amount of ammunition that you had available.
A bowman cant wait for a target to present its self with the bow drawn where a crossbowman can wait indefinitely for a target to percent its self. A bowman keeping their bow at full draw is just what you see in movies in real life that is not possible as your arm will tire in just a few seconds.
There are true advantages to both crossbows and longbows. Though a crossbow cant fire as far it has far better penetrating power at shorter ranges. Bows are better at longer ranges as the longer thinner arrow can fly farther than the shorter and thicker crossbow bolt do to eachs aerodynamics.
The real question is where does the state wants to spend its money. Bows where far cheaper but to hire a component archer was extremely expensive. Or. You could spend your money on very expensive crossbows and pay your crossbowman next to nothing. Crossbowman where far easier to replace when killed as by the next battle you can replace your crossbowmen from your supply of footmen if you could have saved the crossbows from the battlefield. When your archers where killed it could take years to replace them.
As for reusing arrows or bolts that was not all that common as they would have been stepped on, broken in the course of the battle or simply lost. You would be extremely lucky to retrieve one percent of your ammunition after the battle from breakage and the ammunition just not being able to be found in the tall grass. I have lost many bolts at archery ranges because I just could not find them in the well mowed very short grass. In foot high grass the only way of finding it is by stepping on it and hearing it snap. Why do you think its so easy to find stone arrowheads all over the place. They where lost in the grass after being fired and it was far faster just to make more than to spend hours trying to find them. Bow hunters today don't bother to much hunting down lost arrows they shot into the woods as its just not worth the time.

Fires, debris, buildings half-standing, smoke billowing through the air creating a dark and troubling atmosphere even though it's day time. Looks like the start of your stereotypical man-made movie apocalypse to me, and probably more realistic to how one would actually look, as opposed to said movies.
Exception being the characters not looking scraped up and with dirty tattered clothes, and the plants being green and undamaged, but it could be the beginning of said apocalypse (and plus the plants wouldn't be that greatly affected unless burnt)

I'm actually impressed that you have him holding the bow and arrow as one should. I realize it's not something everyone is into, but it bugs me when it's drawn pinching the string and other such things. One tidbit though: arrows are generally designed with one odd colored fletching. This is placed on the outside of the bow because if you placed the arrow upside-down the fletching would be perpendicular right against the bow and ruin the arrow. Again, not really important, but a fun tid-bit :)
Very nice :3 also kind of funny when I think about how I got a duo image somewhat though not overly similar to this a few days before hand

Umbrella Corporation have unleashed an apocalyspe...A zombie plague upon the world 'D;....Im affraid from this point onwards...it's everyone for themselves, survival is paramount. For either we fight or we die..... XD
But in all seriousness though, terrific pic. And i agree it just oozes atmosphere...I mean its bright & still relatively sunny, the plants & fields are green n growing like any other normal day...there's an uneasy calm, an unerving, uncomfortable tension to things, all this umongst the ongoing descrustion as buildings burn erupting into flames, thick, black smoke bellowing into the sky clouding out the light gradually, fires roaring in the distance...You can tell its still early days...And you get the impression that worst is yet to come*evil laugh* xD. But all that's happening around the characters, it just sets the mood here rather nicely. A wonderful contrast. Its fantastically done. An outstanding piece.
Awesome job :).

This is an awesome picture and I don't want to troll, but if I wear a pair of white pants to my desk job they come home looking dirtier than that. the snowleopard/hyena should at LEAST have some knee-scuff marks, unless that's a The Gap they're crawling out of ;)
This is an amazing picture but that really screws with your tone. I only bring up the clothes because the expressions, the weapons, and outstanding background are so good and so consistent with the apocalypse theme that the clothes really go against the rest of the picture. Being dirty and disheveled has almost become standard as far as post-apoc goes. http://www.amctv.com/shows/the-walking-dead/cast
don't mean to lecture, i thought the pic was awesome :3
