Chapter 5: The City of Humans
“What is this city called?” Flint asked as his face searched the massive ports and filled streets.
Kuusco informatively replied, “New Angeles. Before the Human-Thrope war it use to be Los Angeles, but it was leveled, and this one came in it's wake.”
“Wow!”
The buildings were of concrete instead of the stone that Flint was use to. Some towered over head as great giants that watched over the city. Even from the great distance The biggest towers stood higher then the rest. Flint paused and stared. Kuusco noticed, “The Sisters. The largest in this world. Mainly symbolize the victory and the loss. To remind people that you can't have one without the other.”
“Are humans always this poetic?”
Kuusco laughed, “No! They just have a hard time remembering.”
They started on their way following the crowd of human and thrope pedestrians alike. One observation Flint noticed when they merged in the crowd was that all the thropes were acting ecstatic. Some even stupid.
They would ask simple questions in a childish manner. He passed a mole asking a human, “Missy miss! What is that building made out of?”
The human woman just chuckled, “Oh silly. You're so cute!”
Flint glanced up to Kuusco, “Why are they acting like this? It's kinda degrading.”
Kuusco smirked, “Humans think that we are a cartoon stereotype. They act like that 'because we want the humans to think that. They can't resist a cutie puppy.”
They turned into an unpopulated street. The street was not paved anymore, but laid out with stone. It was almost empty, only one human male was walking on it.
Kuusco nudged Flint, “Watch! And play along.”
They walked up to the human. He was blond with slicked hair and a mustache. He wore thick squared glasses, brown polo shirt and pants.
Kuusco walked to him with Flint close by. She tugged his pant leg and he turned around.
“Oh hi sweety! How are you?” He said with a soft tone.
Kuusco widened her eyes, and flint smiled largely, almost painfully. Kuusco cleared her throat and spoke in a high pitched voice, “Howdy mister! I was wonderin....wonderin.... My stepson!”
She hugged Flint and pulled him in closer, “Ain't he cute?”
The man chuckled and replied, “He sure is!.”
She let Flint go and put her arms behind her back, “He found lots of money! And he wants to save.....Save his money! But we don't know where the bank is!”
The man smiled wider, “You want to know where it is?”
Flint and Kuusco nodded happily. The man pointed toward the direction, “See that clock tower?”
Kuusco nodded in a goofy fashion. “That is the bank.”
“Thank you mister!” Kuusco replied as she grabbed Flint's hand and they carried on. Flint glanced back, “Wow! It worked!”
“Always does.” Kuusco replied confidently.
They made it to the bank and the batfox grinned in excitement, “All right! Lets check this place out.”
They entered with casual manners. Flint was nervously trying to avoid eye contact with the humans, while Kuusco went memorizing the security devices. The bank was moderately filled with humans. Flint and Kuusco stood out, despite their small stature. The sixty-foot walls were white with a wood finish trim. Chandeliers hung halfway from the ceiling giving light to the whole bank.
They approached the counter where the bank teller was greeting the last human customer goodbye. The human teller had a sunny smile as she waited for the next in line. Unfortunately for the thropes the counter was to tall. The teller only saw them because of Kuusco's ears peeking from the her perspective from behind the desk. The thropes came up, and before Kuusco could say anything the teller's smile melted to a disappointed scoff, “This is the human line. If you want to make an account you must go to the Anthro Desk clerk, Meshinelle.”
An embarrassed Kuusco lowered her ears, “Sorry.”
And They turned toward the direction that was pointed for them.
Near the dark corner of the bank sat a small desk. Behind it was a middle age woman and her thrope assistant, a female canine. Flint captured a look at her and stared. She stared back at him with a smile, making him pause. Kuusco had to grab his arm and drag him to the desk.
“Hi! How may I help you?” Said the human.
Kuusco nudged Flint and he swayed until he click back, “OH!! Yeah!”
Flint pulled out a messy wallet, and fiddled around trying to find the opening. The Canine assistant giggled at the goofy fox, as he dropped the wallet and picked it up. He finally pulled out his credit chip with 300 credits on it. He stuttered his words, “I-i-i-i Want-wwww-w-w-want....”
Kuusco rolled her eyes, “He needs to make an account.”
After the account was complete, Kuusco led Flint out the door. Once outside Flint clutched his chest, “I think I'm in love!”
Kuusco scoffed at him, “Oh come on! You aren't in love! You're just horny.”
“Yeah! But maybe her and I....”
“You just saw her! You didn't say anything. Just babbled and dropped things.”
“Ok. But she looked at me back! No female ever did that!”
“You're serious?”
Flint nodded. Kuusco stared for a bit then replied, “Dork!”
“Hey!”
“Well! You are!”
“Oh come on! I am sure as old as you are you drooled over someone before.”
“Did you just call me old?”
Flint puffed up, “Yeah!”
Kuusco glared at him and he shrunk again, “I am so sorry.”
Kuusco shook her head, “Dork.”
They went back to the ship to wait till nightfall. Jakar was watching the television when They called up for him to open the ramp. Flint went directly to his bunk while Kuusco went to the control room.
Flint plopped on his bed and thought about the canine. He soon went so deep in his thoughts, that he didn't see the SCRiD come in his room. It approached him and inspected his left leg. Flint came to reality when he heard the click of his prosthetic being removed. “WHAT?!”
The SCRiD tucked it under its arm and ran out the door. Flint quickly hopped and pursued it to the door. The little machine ran faster then he could hop.
Being in the middle of the hall when he gave up, Flint hopped back to his room for the crutches. They weren't there. Flint felt helpless. Propping himself on the doorway he pressed the intercom button, “Kuusco! They took my leg, and my crutches!”
The intercom replied with Kuusco's voice, “I didn't hear Captain!”
Flint sighed and rubbed the brim of his muzzle, “Captain.....They took my leg....and my crutches.”
“I know!” She replied.
“Wait!...how! They did it just now!”
“I know! They brought it to me and they are fixing and cleaning it for you.”
“I kinda need it!”Flint responded with annoyance.
“Well! Then come and get it!”
“I CAN'T! IT'S WHAT I USE TO WALK WITH!!!!”
The intercom had dead silence. Flint calmed down, “Sorry.”
Still quiet.
“Captain.”
Kuusco came back, “Much better!”
“Can someone bring to me, please?”
“Nope! Gotta come and get it!”
“But....How?”
“Not up to me!”
The intercom shut off and Flint pounded the wall.
He paused and swam in thoughts, then he positioned himself outside his bunk. Hopping little by little, using the wall as his crutch, he finally mad it to the control room. He looked around and noticed the SCRiD on the other side of the control room, cleaning his leg from left over charcoal. No one else was there, but his focus was on the SCRiD. Flint took a big breath and made a large leap toward it. He fell on his face.
He groaned and lifted himself to his knee. He rubbed his nose and looked at the SCRiD. It seemed to taunt him. Flint gritted his teeth and crawled toward it. Determined to get to it and tear it apart he clambered the best he could toward it.
Finally it was within his reach, but the SCRiD jumped up, chattered and proceeded to run off.
“NO YOU DON'T!!!!” Flint yelled as he clutched its neck. He strangled it like it was alive, and then proceed to tear its lamp like head off. Sparks and spastic shaking were the last thing of the helpless machine as He tore it apart. When he was done, he grabbed his leg, and locked it back on.
Out of nowhere Kuusco and Jakar walked in and Kuusco clapped, “You made it!”
Flint stood up and looked at the scattered bits of SCRiD, “OH CRAP!, I'm sorry!”
Kuusco smiled, “It's ok! The rest will fix him.”
Jakar had a shocked face. Flint felt bad, but he didn't expect Jakar to smile, “That was cool!”
“Really? You're saying that?”
Jakar shrugged, “Well yeah! It was.”
