Berserker rage was useful back in the age of swords, but not so much nowadays. Today, the cooler head usually prevails. You can scream, stomp and piss on your enemy's corpse AFTER you've won the fight.

"Today the cooler head usually prevails"
That "usually" allowing for the few exceptions that prove the rule... Marv from Sin City for example. Though obviously Rumbolt is much more a Hartigan kind of guy. The main difference beyond mindset and builds? Marv had a mission, Hartigan had a responsibility, just like Rumbolt does here.
Very nice comic Karno, definitely enjoying it.

You know what'd be a funny twist ending? Rumbolt gets charged with murder for killing these guys. It seems to be happening alot lately. What's blatantly self-defense is just taken as a willingness to murder. I can see the headline now. "Cop commits mass murder, claims self-defense!" Bet me it doesn't happen. :p
Well on the flip-side some guy down in Texas saw some people breaking into a neighbor's house, called 911 and told the operator that he had a loaded shotgun and was going to go out and kill them, the operator repeatedly told him to stay inside and that they'd be there shortly. Instead he hung up, went outside and killed them, came back inside and redialed 911 to say that they'd 'threatened' him and he'd killed them in 'self-defense'. I'm not sure how two unarmed guys that at least one got shot in the back were threatening a guy who was told to stay inside and let the police he took the time to call deal with it. clearly he had murder on his mind and not self-defense.
I'm not saying there aren't people who claim self-defense to cover a murder but I'm talking about when it's obviously self-defense. ie,person A was about to be harmed by person B. Or in this case. If they'd called the cops, best case scenerio is they *might* talk them down and get everyone out alive, but they'd have still terrorized the kids and raped the wife. Worst case scenerio, they murder the family and leave before the cops show up.
Plus,in your example, they were still committing a crime with who knows what all intentions in mind. If the neighbors were home,it's probably a good thing he killed 'em cause you could end up with murder, kidnapping,or a stand off with the cops. I'd like some more details before I pass judgement on that. Like what if his neighbor was elderly or infirm? They wouldn't need weapons to do terrible things then. On the other hand,if the neighbors were on vacation or something and the guy knew the house was empty, yeah,he should've left it for the police. Plus, how would he have known if they were unarmed? All he knew was 2 thugs were busting into his neighbor's house. Lots of circumstances and all that need to be cleared up.
If the cops can prove it wasn't self-defense,then he should go to jail. If they can't then you can look down your nose at him all you want, but he proved self-defense and if it's good enough for the court,it's good enough for me.

The guy's neighbors were out of town, he called the cops to report it and told them he was going to go out and kill them, he waited for them to come out, went outside when there were no indications that they were going to come into his house (they already had stuff from the vacant house after all) where he was completely safe (they can't very well be a threat to him when he is in his house and they're outside at his neighbors, especially sitting in his house with a shotgun), shot them (and should have been able to tell if he was watching them that closely if they had anything for weapons and if so had no reason to go out if they did have weapons) then came back in to calmly report that he'd killed both of them. That's not self-defense, that's murder. He went out with the intent to kill them for robbing his neighbor's house and not to defend himself or anyone else.
As far as the Rumbolt story goes depending on how Karno feels like commenting on the legal system he could go with a traditional 'Rumbolt saves the day' or could go with the more depressing and pessimistic (although not impossible) problem of being accused of murder for saving his wife and kids from rape and murder by someone looking to make a name for himself or just cop-hating reporters (like that Lacross team that got vilified by an overvealous prosecutor when they were in fact innocent of the rape charges against them), or could go for something else entirely. Whatever he goes with I'm sure it'll be well-written.

I dunno,it sounds kind of incomplete. Why would he want to kill 2 guys for breaking into someone's house? Sure, you can say "he's an asshole",but that's kind of a general thing. I mean,he told the cops he was gonna kill them, did he give a reason? I don't think he can qualify for self-defense,but I would like to know what reason he gave for doing that. And it's beside the point of what I was originally talking about, which was obvious self-defense twisted into a murder rap.
And the ending was already written and done. Karno said this was an older story that was already completed. I was just speculating on the ending. :p

He wanted to kill them for robbing his neighbor, placing property/things as more important than the lives of other human beings. From what I remember of the transcripts of his two 911 calls before and after the murders he was downright eager to go out and kill them and the tone of how he reported it as bland as reporting killing a strange dog on his property. Yes I know I did go off on a tangent mentioning this, given the flipside of wrongly accused of murder for self-defense, you've someone guilty of murder claiming it was all self-defense.
Well whether the ending was already written or not from our perspective it's still up in the air after all. Should be interesting seeing how it all goes.
