This is a Black Viper (Vipera Berus) that I saw today, while out geocaching. Very difficult to get a good photo, sadly, as he/she was moving quite quickly.

A viper is a poisonous animal with venom pits or sacks in the side of their head connected to fangs in the front or very back of the mouth. this snakes mouth and head are not nearly wide enough to be a venomous snake. You may not call it a Rat snake, but it is not a Viper either.
BUT! I just looked this up and it seems you are correct http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vipera_berus
Here in America, vipers have larger heads, like the Cotton Mouth or RattleSnake. Sorry to call you wrong, I just dont know my Europe breeds ^^
