And so Alphonse Norwich IV returns home after a colorful visit to the United States, with a lot to think about between now and the FBA Draft. A short story for now, where we leave our main characters until their paths cross next. What all might happen between now and then?

Uh huh. Far be it from entering his skull that a significant part of why Rat Alley is such a shithole is because they've turned into a dangerous, segregated ghetto that can't get proper service because that would mean having nonies be able to work in and service the place without fearing for their hides. Not to mention how segregation does -wonders- for job opportunities. You're a good writer man, because your glimpses into Alfie's mind make me be annoyed at him and pity him. Mostly annoyed. Though, I'll be holding up hope Muri can drill that head of his and maybe flesh some fresh perspective into the big clod.
This comment made me smile. I'm glad that's coming across that Alfie has completely blocked off his "movement's" role in the downfall of his hometown. It's a vicious cycle: the worse things get, the harder they all hunker down and blame the outside world, which only causes further deterioration. Something's gonna have to give someday, it remains to be seen if Muri can start pushing his mindset in the right direction.
Thanks so much for the kind words!

I wish that living in Quebec hadn't made me so familiar with that mindset, even if only a "milder" version of it.
It's kind of "funny"/sad how the support in favor of separation from Canada,) rises the poorer an area is, and how badly off those areas would be -if- separation actually was to happen. And how with said support for separation also rise a "pride" of being "Pure laine"(a slang term in Quebec which loosely translate into "Pure whool", to stand for "pure breed"), at the same time than rants about the "assimilation threat" presented by the presence of english and immigrants and how "purity" of the language must be maintained against such. :/
Did I also say Quebec is amongst the poorest provinces in the Canadian Confederation?

Heh, let's just say lesson learned from college(and I -am- french canadian)....
Never be careless enough to not pay attention what you're wearing and show up at a public french-language college with a shirt written "Cool to be Canadian".
(long story told short: French canadians known to be federalists(wishing to stay with the canadian federation, and being against separation) are often seen by diehard separatists as morons at best, or borderline traitors in some circle. In their eyes you can "not" be proud of being both Canadian and being from Quebec. That kind of "you're with us or against us" mentality is something I have too many bad memories of from the last time Quebec had a majority separatist government.

Also, this said it's not as bad as it's used to bed. Support in favor of separation has dropped -drastically- over the last decade(from the nearly 50% of the 90ies' referendum, it's dropped in polls to about 28-33% at it' best lately). Still, it remains a -very- vocal group especially now that the separatist Parti Quebecois has regained power(albeit only as a minority government, and in great part to a case of "slipping through the cracks of a three way race" that saw the two opposing parties very divided yet still -very- close to the PQ in term of both vote percentage and elected representatives).
Heh, old habits die hard. Ireland will have the same problem too, no matter how many people dont like what the IRA is doing and just want peace, the idea of an irish republic independent from england will not die.
OH BOY, thats a new idea. Let Alphonse here meet an IRA member. I would like to see how they would come along. :P

I know bringing rl politics and such into a parallel furry universe might be a stupid idea, but...
What's Alphonse stance. Like, he looks and dresses like a punk and sees himself as one. He has aspects of the nationalistic skinhead movement, with all the speciesism and such, plus the whole concept of "rats almost killed europe, so we are the superior european species" and calling americans traitors to the crown. On the other hand, he still displays a stance of rejecting everything old school, traditional and posh, and has that whole Rodent Resistance thing going on. It just conflicts. You can't be all "Americans are traitors to england" when you seem to give a fuck about england yourself.
So...is the rat alley and alphonse just a mixup of various problems of self-inflicted segregation and ghettoization, inspired by rl but unlike it? Or is there a definite rl inspiration for him, meaning there is a real district in rl Toxteth that is run by white skinheads with a racist ruleset? At least I assume Alphonse is supposed to be white, but seeing how these are furries, that concept is moot anyway. :P

Lotta good questions here. I'll try and make my answers concise.
Toxteth is the most poverty-stricken area of England, and had serious issues with riots back in 1981, so I drew from that as an exceptionally poor region that seemed likely to spawn a racist group, which is how these things often happen. I didn't base this off of groups in Toxteth, rather I felt that the absolute poorest and most downtrodden area of England would be the best candidate FOR a group like this.
He's actually not a nationalist, he's a supremacist. Any division these rats can make over others to assert superiority, they will. Rats are better than non-rats, English rats are better than American rats. They aren't loyal to the crown itself, the phrase "traitor to the crown" was meant more as an assertion that they're part of the "true" rat heritage which, back in the 1300s, attempted to overtake the continent. By contrast, American rats didn't stick around, they "ran" from their homeland to greener pastures. They see the dynasty of English rats who carried the plague as the greatest lineage, not the "British royal" dynasty. Remember, we're talking specists here, there are going to be some issues with the ideology.
The whole ecosystem is inspired by Stormfront-like movements funneled through the lens of British skinheads, it's my extrapolation of what happens when a "racist" element hunkers down on itself. It's not truly based on any one thing so much as a big mix of several pieces. It's a caricature of supremacist groups, not just a real one made furry.
