A little over a month ago my husband and I went to the Georgia Aquarium for my birthday. They've got an animal interaction program called "Beluga and Friends", which we signed up for. We lucked out and it was just the two of us, so we had the trainer, belugas and seals all to ourselves. Even if we had not been alone, the program is worth every penny. Photo by SharpShooter Imaging, which provides a professional photographer to capture the entire experience on camera for you.
And now I can say I've had a beluga spit water at me. Beethoven here is trained to do this on command :P

Definitely! Feeding, petting (and rubbing their tongues, oddly enough) is part of the positive reinforcement of training. At the trainer's direction we got to feed and pet them throughout the session. That included handling their flukes and tails - they're trained to help their caregivers out by presenting on command so it's easy to collect blood and tissue samples for medical testing when needed. The best way I can describe the way their skin feels is that it's like supple wet leather. Very smooth and pretty slippery, but not really rubbery like you would think.
