(Finally got around to writing the next little installment to "The Micro's Hero." I know it's not the longest chapter but it'll still do...
In this installment, Dave and Zack take Sarah to Mrs Backster's house in hopes of reuniting Sarah with her best friend Tyler. We can only hope things work out for Sarah since Tyler was already bought and paid for by these macros)
The Micro’s Hero
Chapter 6
“I’m almost ready Sarah… Once I finish these dishes, Zack and I will take you to Tyler to work out something with the macros holding him.”
“Ok,” Sarah beamed, pacing anxiously atop the dinner-table. The cool wood was nice beneath her paws but at the rate she was moving the wood was starting to get warm. Would they get Tyler back, would he be ok, would he be hurt, injured, or dead? Sarah’s head was just a swarm of thoughts as she waited for Dave to finish. Oh she wished he’d just hurry up. Every second wasted was a second she may never see Tyler again and if that were the case, to only make it to Tyler just seconds after they could have saved him would have been nothing but pure terror.
“All done,” Dave announced over his shoulder, wiping his hands off on the towel that hung on the fridge’s door-handle. “So, are you ready to go?” He asked, walking across the kitchen before lowering his palm to the table.
“Yeah, I’m ready. Please hurry… We have to go save him.”
“Don’t worry Sarah… We’ll do what we can.”
Once Sarah had settled herself down on his paw, Dave headed over to the door, slipping his old worn-out shoes on before waiting for Zack to do the same. From the look of his sneakers one might think that Dave never purchased shoes except when they fell apart, but the worn look was just from constant use. He only bought them a few months ago, but he and Zack walked everywhere, so their shoes tend to wear-out quicker than others.
“Alright you two… Try not to get into too much trouble while we’re gone,” Zack chuckled as he looked back at the two micro mice on their couch, their eyes glued to the television on some kid’s show with bright lights and flashing colors; the commonality between kid’s shows making it hard to tell which one they were watching. He shook his head in amusement, wondering if the mice even heard him as he walked out after Dave, remembering to double-check and make sure that he locked the door behind him. With micros staying behind, Zack wanted to make sure their house was locked down and secure. Once the door was shut there was no way for the micros to get outside. While the micros could leave at any time, weather strips prevented the micros from getting under any shut door, and he and Dave regularly checked the walls for small holes large enough for a micro to get through. It wasn’t to keep the micro’s prisoner but to keep them safe.
The drive to Mrs. Backster’s house wasn’t long at all. They would have walked the seven or eight miles, but they didn’t want to leave the other micros at their house all day by themselves while they were out walking. Sarah was in bright spirits though, choosing to sit on Dave’s shoulder while Tyler drove. Her legs were idly kicking with eagerness as she looked forward, almost as if it were her giving Tyler the directions on where to go. With micros in the car, other motorists would assume Tyler was an old man as vehicle after vehicle passed them up. After playing a quick game of eye-spy to pass the time, before they knew it they were pulling into Mrs. Backster’s driveway and Sarah’s ears perked all the way up as she stared ahead at the white house before them.“Common Tyler, let’s see if we can build you a house!” Buster joyously exclaimed as he quickly made his way into the living room with Tyler held safely in his paws before sitting down in a wide spread catastrophe of Legos that had been previously deposited before they were so rudely interrupted for breakfast.
“Alright Tyler, you stand here so I know how high to make the walls. You can also help me build them too with these,” Buster instructed as he set a handful of variously colored Legos down next to his pet. “Once we finish with the house then we can build another, and then we can make a town, and then a skyscraper,” Tyler went on and on about the limitless possibilities with a limited amount of building material.
After putting the mess away in the kitchen, Jessica was horrified to find that she no longer had a living-room carpet and instead a disaster of reds, blues, yellows and every other color of the spectrum strewn about the floor. She was just about to say something when the doorbell rang, grabbing her attention away from the mess she would probably be cleaning up later.
“Make sure when you’re done playing with Tyler you put your mess away…. I’m not cleaning this one up too,” Jessica spoke over her shoulder before opening the front door.
“Hi, may we speak to… Jessica… I had no idea you lived here?” Dave asked rhetorically.
“Dave… Zack… What are you two doing here?”
Dave gently pulled a hand out of his pocket, revealing Sarah as Jessica looked down at her. He had her in his pocket just for a bit of safety. Having micros out in the open when confronting a macro made them unfortunate targets should the opposing party get unruly.
“Well hello there… And who are you?” Jessica asked, looking down at Dave’s paw with a soft smile.
“Sarah,” Sarah replied timidly, scooting back a bit in Dave’s paw for a little more protection.
“Don’t worry Sarah, this is Jessica… She works with us down at the office. She helps micros out too,” Dave reassured as he gently rubbed Sarah’s back with his thumb.
“So what brings you three here? Please… Come in.” Sarah smiled, stepping aside to let Dave and Zack enter before leading them to the kitchen where they all took a seat around the table, except Sarah. She chose to stand on the table, but made sure to stay close to Dave’s paw which was resting next to her.
“Well Jess, you see, Sarah here was part of a group of micros living out in the woods when they were attacked and captured. We were able to save Sarah from the restaurant we were at, but her friend was taken away, most likely to a pet shop, and well… We believe that the micro you purchased the other day was him,” Dave explained, keeping his hand close to Sarah since she seemed to like it.
“Could we possibly see the micro you purchased, please?” Zack asked.
“Of course you can… BUSTER, sweetie… Could you come into the kitchen, and bring Tyler with you.”
Sarah’s ears instantly perked up at the mention of Tyler’s name as she took a few steps closer to Jessica. One might think she was standing on her tippy-toes at the amount of eagerness she was currently displaying. Hearing Buster come into the room, all Sarah could see were the rabbit’s white ears as he approached the table.
“May I see Tyler real quick?” Jessica asked as she lowered her hand to her son.
“Sure mom, but why? Did we do something wrong?” Buster asked, unsure as to why his mom was taking Tyler.
“No sweetie, because we have a guest who might know him,” She replied.
Sarah was taking even more small steps towards Jessica, her fear of the giant rabbit replaced by the thought of being reunited with her friend. As Jessica lowered her hand to the table Sarah stopped. Her vision was obscured by Jessica’s other paw but it soon lifted away.
“TYLER!” Sarah shouted as she ran over to him.
“Sarah… Is that really you?” Tyler asked. But before he could receive a reply, Sarah ran into him, slightly knocking the wind out of him as she embraced him warmly. “Oh Sarah… I thought I lost you.”
“Me too,” Sarah sniffled, wiping a tear away as she held him close, fearing that if she let him go she’d loose him forever.
“We’d like to return these two to where they live. We’ll happily reimburse you what you paid for him. We just want what’s best for them,” Dave explained to Jess.
“Of course… I can’t be the one held responsible for splitting these two up now. Not after they defeated the odds and are back together… You don’t have to pay me back for him… I’d happily let you take Tyler and return them to their home.”
“You hear that Tyler… We get to go home,” Sarah smiled. “Thank you… Thank you so much,” Sarah smiled as she looked up at Jessica, her hands still clasped around Tyler.
But a slight sniffling caught everyone’s attention. When they all looked over all they could see were the teary eyes of a little rabbit who could barely see over the top of the table with the aid of his paws grasping the edge of the table-top.
“But… But you can’t leave Tyler… You can’t leave… I thought you were my friend… We… We didn’t even finish building your house together,” Buster sniffled again, wiping away the tears that had already collected. “P-Please don’t go… What did I do wrong? Was I mean to you?”
“Dave… Do you think Tyler and Sarah would mind if they lived here? Tyler is very well looked after by my son. They pretty much play all day long, and Tyler gets food from our table and has a very nice place to sleep at night. I’d be more than happy to let Sarah stay here too,” Jessica asked, placing a hand on her sons back to try and comfort him.
“I don’t know… What do you two think? Tyler… Sarah… Would you two like to stay here with Jessica and her son?” Dave asked, letting the two micros decide rather than deciding for them.
Tyler was torn in half. He had grown too really like Buster as a dear friend, and the food and shelter that the rabbits gave him was undeniably the best thing that had ever happened to him. But on the other hand, returning to his home with Sarah was equally as important. He thought he’d never see Sarah again when they were split up in the warehouse, and now they were reunited. But what would they return too? Their home had been destroyed, and the macros that attacked them would surely come back. He lost Sarah once, so why would he go back and put them in the same possible situation again?
“Sarah… Jessica and Buster are very nice to me. They’ve never hurt me, and they give me food and a place to live. I know you probably want to go home, but our home was destroyed… Those macros will come back and if we were to get captured again we may not ever find each other. Give them a chance, Sarah. I know not all macros can be trusted, but you can trust them.”
Sarah didn’t know what to think. Here they were, reunited with the chance to go home, but as she listened to Tyler, she couldn’t help but agree. No matter how much she wanted to go home the thought of being captured again was all too real. And he was right. If they were caught they’d probably never get the second chance that they were now being given.
“Ok Tyler… We can stay here,” Sarah whispered into Tyler’s ear as she held him close again.
“We’ll stay,” Tyler spoke up for the macros to hear.
“Really,” Buster sniffled one last time before wiping away the last of his tears, “You’ll stay?”
“We’ll stay.”
Buster slowly raised his hand and set it onto the table next to Tyler and Sarah. Tyler didn’t hesitate to get on, but Sarah did just a little. She didn’t know Buster very well, and he was just a toddler. But Tyler seemed to trust the youngster very much, so why shouldn’t she?
“It’s ok Sarah… Buster’s really gentle… He won’t hurt you,” Tyler smiled as he held out his hand for her to take. As he felt her fingers glide into his, Tyler grasped her paw before helping her onto Buster’s paw.
Sarah couldn’t get over how soft Busters paw-pads were, but that was probably a tribute to his young age. But most importantly he was slow and careful with his actions. He didn’t move his hand very fast, and he even cupped his fingers slightly to offer a bit of protection as they sat down in the center of his palm.
Once Buster had the two micros with him, he slowly pulled his hand back to his chest before walking away into the living-room. He was overjoyed that Tyler didn’t want to leave him and chose to stay. With a smile bigger than any he’d ever shown, Buster now had a house to build for two micros instead of just one.
“Thank you Jess… This really means a lot to us,” Zack spoke up after Buster had left.
“Don’t mention it… My son really likes playing with the micros. He’ll definitely grow up helping them out in the future. Just like his father used to.”
“Well, we’re just gonna say goodbye to Sarah and be outa your hair,” Dave smiled before he and Zack stood up.
“No problem… Their probably playing in the living-room right now,” Sarah motioned with her head before standing up leading them in.
Dave and Zack walked into the living-room to find Sarah playing along with Tyler and Buster. They were more than happy to have found a place for her to stay and be safe rather than releasing her back into the wild. Micros that had a loving macro family always lived longer than the others, so knowing Sarah would live as such was utter fulfillment.
“Sarah,” Dave spoke as he knelt down and lowered his hand to the floor, the little micro happily climbing aboard before he slowly lifted her into the air. “Zack and I are gonna get going. I hope you’re happy here with them Sarah… But know you’re always welcome to come back to our place if you need too for any reason. We’re there for you.”
Dave couldn’t help but cuddle Sarah against his cheek for a moment before Zack came up next to him.
“Goodbye Sarah… Don’t worry, we’ll see you again. I promise,” Zack smiled, giving Sarah a little rub on the back with a finger.
“Thank you Dave… Thank you Zack… I’ll never forget what you did for me,” Sarah spoke as she walked up to the edge of Dave’s paw. It was clear what she wanted, and after lifting her up to his face, Dave’s thoughts were confirmed when she gave him as much of a hug as she could.
When she was finished Sarah turned towards Zack who lowered his face down to her. She gave his muzzle a hug as well before Zack gave her a playful nose-bump, purring the whole time which made her giggle.
“Goodbye Sarah… We promise to visit you when we can,” Dave finished as he lowered her down to Buster who gently took her back before setting her on the ground next to Tyler.
Sarah waited, watching Dave and Zack leave until she couldn’t see them anymore and heard the front-door close behind them. Turning back to Tyler, Sarah could only breathe a sigh of relief. She was safe; in a house of macros she was safe. Tyler was there, and they didn’t have to run or hide anymore. These macros, Jessica, and Buster, were now more than just macros. They were her family, and she was glad to be with them.
