Not really a story. Just a half baked idea for a setting of one. Story comes later...
Yes I already know how amazingly cliche everything in this is.

The Chalakdoluv Empire - Tho Chalakdoluv Enkalo
Is an ancient and advanced civilization, skilled in the arts of science and magic that faced genocide, and nearly went extinct/Exsemcs .
Only a few of the rare bat people remain, and even fewer artifacts/aursofaucss of their old culture still remain within their dead empire.
(I’m trying to figure out if I should just cut out the science part and make them pure magic instead.)
In the years before it was a powerful and expansive empire it was divided into two castes/kaetot that personify the working classes of the empire.
The “Vi” caste that is the white collar class
And the “Niv” caste that is the blue collar class.~The Vi’s
They usually had fancier clothing and adorned their fur or wing membranes with the colors blue and violet as a symbol of their status and their manes are often colored artificially, but is not exclusive to the Vi’s, The reason being that it is less likely to fade.
The Vi caste color Blue/Brio
denotes creativity/claakivir, and Violet/Vaarod
denotes Wisdom/Wakkan.
Their natural fur color is usually in brown tones but Albinos are held in high regard, even if they come from the lower caste. Physically they have softer facial features that can be vaguely humanoid; their bodies are slender in build. Their eye color is sometimes green or violet, but that is still a special circumstance as their natural eye color is still brown.
Even though the Vi’s can be mistaken as the over lording rich ruling down on the weak they actually have their place as citizens too. Their caste’s job is to do the deep thinking and invention of great machines and magicks. Because of their role as thinkers they are usually the first to start commerce if there is no grand mechanism/Modhuvakn that needs help being designed.
They also mostly are the ones that make laws but from time to the Niv’s can hold just as much power in office when their wisdom prevails.
~The Niv’s
As the laborers of the empire they usually wear simple clothing that can allow them to move freely. But when they do wear fancy clothes their caste’s color is brown and gold.
The color Brown/Blavv denotes strength/srunj, and the color Gold/Gurd denotes skill/sroll.
They tend to not go for body modification as much as the Vi’s do since it can become cumbersome. The Niv’s physique is a bit stocky and thick with muscle, and their facial features are slightly more feral in appearance.
Aside from being the manual workers they are also valued as soldiers of the empire, thus balancing the flow of wealth between the two castes.
Despite being the blue collar caste their mental power shouldn’t be underestimated either, as they are the ones who improve upon the original designs of the Vi’s mechanisms.
~ The Sentinels/ Tho Okkokem
Their system isn’t perfect however and the disgruntled soldiers or crazed mages who start causing trouble often have to be dealt with by a small few called the Sentinels/ Okkokem, who are an honorary third caste without any real presence within the system. They are a well-kept secret within Chalak society because it is said that speaking of them brings bad luck to the house, as Okkokem also serve serve the emperor as royal assasins/samsemark.
~ The Emperor/ Tho Kruxo
Unlike ordinary governments, the Chalakdoluv Kruxo is half elected and half born into his or her position, since the elected are only chosen from bloodline. If the royal bloodline either ends or there are no worthy candidates from the bloodline at all then a new line is chosen. The Chalak seem to believe that experience accumulates through generations.
Firstly to even be considered for the title the candidate must have visited all of the nations that are allied with the Chalak. That is so the candidate knows of all of their ally’s culture and current problems so that that when a Kruxo is elected he or she isn’t a blind fool. This is the trail of ¬¬Awareness.
Next the candidate must then give a valuable gift to the leaders of each nation. The gifts value must be relevant to their economic state. This trail usually tells the character of the potential emperor through the gift they give. This is the trail of Charity.¬
And finally the longest trail is that the candidate must undertake is to learn the ways of the opposite caste and learn to craft in the castes tradition and eventually create a personal Sigilisk to present as their crown of office.
This trail ensures that the Kruxo is also familiar with their own internal struggles. This is the trail of Familiarity.
When all of the trails have been passed the candidate is then chosen among the rest and has the title of Kruxo, or emperor added to the front of their name forever.
The title stays with them after death or even if they resign.~ Chalakdoluv Sdaovdo – Chiropteran Science
Their creations were almost always made out of a lightweight crystal material called Raxanodur could grow into a hardened metal-like state that could withstand numerous decades of outdoor weathering without maintenance. In fact their building material can so closely resemble metal/nodur that it can become magnetic/nukvodad if treated properly.
Yet another one of their Alchemical metals they have created is Dark metal/Dulkonodur. So named because this metal in its highly refined state is completely invisible to the naked eye and the only way to know it’s there at all is by the shadows it casts, hence “dark”. Using Dulkonodur as supports for buildings gives them the effect of looking like they are floating weightless.
However unlike their Raxanodur, it needs costly yearly maintenance to keep it clean so it can maintain its invisible illusion.
One of their greatest achievements in technologic design was the invention of the Sigilisk/Sojolosr; A floating orb machine that could be used to drain the mana/Muvo from the living things below using a focusing geode as its heart/nerladais, and compact it into a single hand held crystal. The mana from that crystal is then able to be turned into any kind of energy in the natural world or used as incredibly powerful gems for enchanted artifacts or machines.
~ Chiropteran magic - Chalakdoluv maujoc
After many thousands of years studying the arcane arts the Chiropterans delved into the secrets of dark magic from the Demons, confident that they were far too powerful for even them. And for a while they were..
They gained the power to use necromancy/macrukomae and create spells of devastating power. The Demons would later use their own most terrible curse on them; the curse of the blood drinker, or Vampire/vengophoru.~ History – Hakdalav, Hasa'miy (One means the history of things and the other means the history of people)
Like any other civilization they had started out as foragers and farmers. But their hostile rainforest land and their curious nature quickly made them think on their toes and strengthen their minds with cunning.
One of the first things they did when they created an organized government was seek out their neighboring races and adapt their inventions into their own.
Soon their own inventions followed and the collective knowledge they had started to snowball into rapid greatness.
With the power of Science and the Arcane/Alduvo there was nothing they couldn’t accomplish in a few years.
With their success they have often been challenged by other cultures in many ways. Be it through War, philosophy, art, or religion.
The Chalakdoluv do not accept any pantheon or deity as a true god. However they have glorified Muses they hold dear but do not worship.
They have never lost a battle in their history because of the way they are able to fight, they can drop heavy stones from the safety of the sky or go to the ground encased in lightweight spiky leather armor and defend land based assets with spears and bows.
If they are somehow disarmed of either weapon their last method of attack is the armor they wear which has many blades attached to their wings, limbs and shoulders.
Eventually when their technology and magic started gaining its highest point they abandoned going to war altogether when they had their mountainous mechanical gaurdians, cities floating high above the clouds, and complex spellcraft all protecting them.
Eventually they had reached such a high point in their intellectual evolution that they called upon the spirits/Skalaks themselves for more knowledge, this would ultimately be their downfall.
With the combined use of both Demon knowledge and their own they made vast incomprehensible wonders and terrible weapons of unmatched power that are still forgotten today.
However if the practitioner of the dark arts was unskilled or made a single mistake the consequences were severe, the Demons/Balmular would use the Chiropterans very own terrible curse against them.
The curse of the Vampire
The late emperor Kruxo’doldaniv made the practice of Demon learned magicks outlawed in order to stop the spread of the vampire curse in the populace but by then it was too late and the Demons used their vampire servants to make sudden siege on the chiropteran city while the demons themselves summoned The Cataclysm of Magma.
It was a tsunami of lava that razed over their land and left nothing alive. Only the very few Chiropterans that were not in the city at the time of the attack survived, but even then they were slowly hunted down by the vampires of their species.
Currently the survivors and their descendants keep their whereabouts unknown from the rest of the world for their safety, staying within hidden strongholds or far from anyone else.
Yes I already know how amazingly cliche everything in this is.
