I remember that, I read it when it came out in '68. It helped me break out of the Souther Baptist Church. It was the first book that actually made me think about anything but school, pleasing my parents and attending Church every time that the doors opened. Give it a few months then read it again, you may become enlightened. For the record I've worshiped Athena since 1973.
A lot of 1960's Science Fiction was anti-establishment, it is up to you to find the best. It isn't always ray guns, monsters grabbing Earth Women and explosions. Fact is I write SF, and it is almost always anti-establishment, or at least anti-organized religion.
Then there is the two Devils Paw novellas... That just knee jerking anti-male rule.
His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the -atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god, but then he never claimed not to be a god.
