Here we have Baird applying his craft as a Runesmith, etching an incantation into the metal of the sword to give it an enchantment of sorts. The pile of dust near the blade is ground sapphire, which will be added to the runes to serve as a catalyst to link them to the ley line of the earth, granting power to the runes to fuel the enchantment.
