This is some airbrushing practice for the steam-punk case I am going to be working on. Thought I would take it up a notch and paint right on the side of one of the spare computers I have laying around. Overall I did ok. The Chinese character in the middle means "Energy". I believe.
What I did well: Rivets look pretty good, color choice seems to be perfect. I learned a lot.
What needs improvement: My rivets are inconsistent and the whole thing is over done, however that was the point, over do it so I learn more.

Awesome job and it's really nice to see someone else doing some airbrush work! Airbrushing rocks! It looks like you used a stencil for those. Did you? If so, I'd love to see it/them.
Overall I think you did a kickass job and the feeling of rusty metal comes across real well. I almost thought the rivets were bullet holes honestly. I think it's because of the darkness, which makes it look like a hole. I believe rivets actually pop out, not sink in, but I could be totally off there. Again, awesome job and I'd love to see more!

Well thank you! I am new to airbrushing but I am defiantly loving it. I have a duel action so I seem to be having the hardest time controlling the interaction between air pressure and ink quantity but I'm getting there!
I'm going to assume you were talking about the rivets when you mentioned a stencil. What I did is punched a hole in an acetate sheet (Saved the little punch out too!) Then you spray the circle trying to get the one edge for the shadow ON the rivet (This is where I overdid it, I should have done a smaller stream along the edge). Then you use the punched out hole, as a second stencil, hit it with a light mist of black as well to shade around the rivet. You are right rivets themselves stick up, but when metal is riveted it tends to make a... funnel of metal.. an indent where the rivit is as the rivet pulls the metal down. If the effect is done lighter than how I did it than it will probably look a lot better. Thank you for your comments and I would love to see some of your airbrushing!

Hey, yeah. I understand what you're talking about and that's an awesome idea. I love using stencils just as much as I like free handing, they are AWESOME tools. Making your own stencils is the best too.
I have this one that I draw by hand then cut into frisket to make a stencil: http://ebonstripes.furtopia.org/Non.....ants_wolf2.jpg
Then I have these that I did freehand:

I really like airbrushing onto fabrics and then wearing my art. =3

Frisket is an airbrusher's best friend. It's plastic sheeting with adhesive on the backing (thinks similar to shelving paper). you cut your stencil out, then stick it in place!
Here's an example:

You can also buy masking fluid, which does the same job as frisket, but is a liquid that can be painted on where you want to keep the airbrush paint off! I have this brand, in the colorless masking fluid.

It is freaking awesome!
