Oreo is the newest member of our guinea pig group! :3
He's still pretty young and small, but he has gone through terrible times. He is one of the few survivors of a fire that broke out in a local pet store.
I've seen him many times in that pet store but despite I fell in love with him, I did not buy him because I did not want to support the bargain with living animals. I was totally horrified by the belief that so many animals, including him, had died in that fire. There were a few survivors of which a vet had taken care of, but I did not know which animals exactly survived. Until last week, when there was an article in the newspaper that the local vet is looking for people to adopt the surviving animals, of which 7 were guinea pigs.
Today I visited the vet and two of the seven guinea pigs were left, one of them was Oreo!!! I just had to adopt him. He's so handsome and sweet-natured. I'm so happy he survived the fire and that he is totally healthy now.
I wouldn't have bought him, because I sweared to never buy a guinea pig in a pet store again. It's kind of creepy that first a pet store had to burn down before I finally adopted him... maybe it is destiny or maybe just coincidence. But it is definately one of the most strangest things that ever happened to me.

i consider the buying of animals a necessary evil in this world. despite your conviction, abstaining doesnt really help and if you really love them, you are making their situation better by buying them. i'd gladly buy a horse if it kept them from being slaughtered by some degenerate killer-buyer.
Well yes, there are always two sides of the medal. As for guinea pigs, there are so many of them in shelters looking for a new home, that it's better to adopt one instead of buying one from a pet store. For every cavy sold in a pet shop, there will be one more produced by a so called breeder. If they don't sell, they "produce" less guinea pigs and the ones in shelters may get a better chance for a new home. At least that's the situation in Germany. I can imagine that this may be differnt for different species of animals :)
