Between my Civil War re-enacting and cruise-in goings on, I REALLY need to get back to my drawing desk, don't I? ^.^
Ah, well. Here's a group shot of my (and Betty's) car show pals, taken last Fri. From l to r: John Muchmore's car, Goldie ('72 Olds 442), Tony hatfield's car, Zee ('80 Datsun 280Z), Tony, some guy (not part of our group), John, Dr. Dave Bishop, DIC (this is, Doctor of Internal Combustion, seated, in red sweater), Betty, Dave's car, Impigna ('62 Chev. Impala).
Chris Hostetter and his '72 Olds 98 didn't show like he said. Dave Robertson and his '98 Camry aren't in the pic.
To be moved to scraps later. I'll get to the next episode of Critters soon - I promise! ^.^

Yeah, I've always been a hsitory nerd, and have been into the CW since I was a pre-teen. So, you can see why it wouldn't take too much to get me into re-enacting, which I started doing since 1996. Last year, I did the ultimate (for me): enlisted in the same regiment my great-great-grandfather did 150 years before. :)
Unfortunately, like my cartoon, I'm in the twilight of my re-eneacting career. Money and time to do it are becoming harder and harder to find. As it is, I just can't devote whole weekends and then go right back to work again for another week like I used to when I was in my 20s. But, like my cartoon, I'll keep doing it as long as I'm able.
Thanks, it is nice, isn't it? :) Tonight when I get off work I'll be meeting up with Dr. Dave and handing Betty over to him for him to fix all the mechanical stuff that has either gone bad or will be due to age or wear. He'll have her for two weeks, he says, but when he's done she should be 20 years and 50K miles healthier than before, and all at a cost of a small fraction of the cost of your typical garage.

That's really awesome! I've fancied myself a history buff since roughly the same period in life maybe around 7th or 8th grade, about the time i started reading up on the paranormal and various subjects. Unfortunately most of my relations came over after the civil war or kept their heads down during the fighting. But i have been to the battlefields at Gettysburg and Antietam (which actually took place on
's birthday 120 years prior) and have seen the OVI regimental flags that are at the state historical society.
While the civil war has always been a favorite of mine, i have to admit my interest in World War 2 history probably overtakes it for me, if only because it's one of the few conflicts in world history that remains unmarred for the most part in the gray tones that normally settle over war. Maybe it's just the romantic nature of it all, or the excellent propaganda we've been provided with since the early 1940s of fighting a war that was truely a struggle between democracy and the fanaticism that Germany and Japan represented.
Wish i had a guy like Dr. Dave, of course for that i'd need a sweet beauty of a car like Betty

Besides the CW, WW2 comes in a close second for me. Although the CW is the first war really documented and covered by mass media, WW2 takes things to the next level. Reading descriptions and seeing pics of people, places and events is one thing. Actually seeing them and hearing them on moving film and being able to hear stories from the lips of those who actually participated is something else altogether.
I must admit, I lOVE having a classic car and the attention I get with it! Unfortunately, tho, everything comes with a price, and in my case, it's the cost of repairs and upkeep (and gas). I talked to my friend about the cost of her present repairs. To get EVERYTHING would cost $500-600 - and that's friend price. To have the minimum needed repairs (which I'm having done) is about $150. Better, but considering our financial situation still a considerable financial wallop. At least I can take comfort in knowing the cost of repairs if my garage did it would be a few thousand. Hell, to repair just her exhaust manifold leak alone would have cost me a grand in the shop! I like having friends.
