Yep. Assholes don't need a big, important reason to try to put a big, permanent hurt on you. They just need to be sociopaths.
And yes, kids are pretty resilient. Show em it wasn't their fault, and you still love em, and they can bounce back from just about anything.

It isn't so much that the parent is going to try to defend the kid (that may be the case, but its a rarity). Its more that the parent does not want to be made to appear inadequet as a parent.
"My child rearing skills f'ed up and my kid is a dick"= No.
"I am a wonderful parent and human being that knows everything, so long as I can blame others" = Yes.

Civil suit? The only possible award is money. The bereft parent is just as much a scumbag as their boy, and they are simply trying to rip off Rumbolt (and the taxpayers of the town that he works for).
A cop once told me that if I ever shoot a burglar, to make very sure that he is dead; that way there are no conflicting stories to confuse the jury, and because wrongful death awards are limited by the income earning potential of the crook, which is generally very low. With pain and suffering awards, the sky is the limit. Corpses can't complain about chronic severe pain. Oh - he also said to make sure that the body is inside my house when the cops arrive. That is exactly the way he put it...

Some parents are also massively disconnected to how their children behave towards other people- they might even act like angels at home, and are massive asses to everyone else. So when their children finally get their comeuppance, the context in which they died/got hurt/whatever makes no sense to them, and they blame the person who did it to them.
Do in that last scene did someone try to sue him? .... ASS. HOLE, damn I would think it would be the other way around. Great Comic, as you can tell I'm really pissed off how you comic emulates real life. I'm not pissed off at you, but... pissed off at people in real life that are the scum that would try this.
You would be surprised how things can leave lasting effects in kids.
The civil suit thing makes me want to puke. The idea that someone tries or actualy succeeds in doing something horrible to you or yours, and you kill them or hurt them, and they or their family has the fucking BALLS to try and sue you for it. Reminds me of a story my parents told me. When my mom was a kid, she and her family came home to find their house was being broken into. Rather then run, the robbers freaked out. The girlfriend of the robber attacked my grandmother, knockign her to the ground and biting her arm. She chewed on my grandmother's arm until the skin was not even attached to the muscle anymore, it was hanging off like an old torn T-shirt. And you know what? They SUED, SUED my grandmother and her family for 'emotional damages' and WON. It is truly an unfair world we live in, makes you wish for more vigilantee justice.
