They were house spirits, until germany christianized, the pagan beleifs were then kicked aside, and the Kobold sprites were re-imaged as men with the heads of angry snarling jackals [the D&D version is lizards... and they're cute x3]

Goblins are similar, but they were just mischevious innocent fairy children... 'til mormons came D:

my favorite are the lizard ones, but seeing your kobolds are nice, i have to commission pictures with me and kobolds sometimes, servents and friends alike ^_^
