This is the first color piece I've done of Jedel, the part demon, deer maiden, who lives in the palace in Andur. This is also the first time I've actually shown the palace in a finished piece.
I wanted to capture the feeling of cool light that occurs at 7 to 8am in morning. Also I wanted to capture both rim lighting on Jedel but also the light that is rebounding off the wall behind her that is providing fill light. Some of my inspiration came from studying the images of Edwin Lord Weeks . Image size 12"x 16', medium color pencil with some marker, gouache, and micron pen.

She inherited her demonic status. Her family was of a minor noble status in the region around Syria. Her grandmother was part of a secret religious sect who as part of their rituals would often have sex with demons. That is how Jedel's mother came into being. Her mother also carried on the tradition and as a result Jedel was born. When Jedel got to the age of about fourteen she started to manifest certain spontaneous aspects for her heritage; mainly making things catch on fire and being immune to fire herself. This caused some awkward problems for the family. After some debate it was decided that the most convinent way to deal with the problem, killing her was ruled out, was to put her under a spell and then sell her into slavery. Her travels led her to the slave market in Andur where Petina initial bought as a house servant. She is now free and serves loosely as part of the Sultan's Retinue.
So, another pic of Jedel at last! I still remember those pics in your own personal sketchbook you showed me, what, a decade ago at one of the last CFs? We met at the "Goodbye to MU Press" room party and were introed by Gerald Perkins. (RIP Jerry.)
I still love that sketchbook piece you did for me of Jedel & Ardashir. It's really lovely. But I am still hoping we get to see her in her demonic form one day.
