Possibly a myth, but the "fainting" was from "hysteria treatments." Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, idiot male doctors thought women needed orgasms to keep them docile, so prescribed regular treatments. Since it would be scandalous for the women to seen going outside to the hospitals, they preferred housecalls from specialist psychotherapists. And thus a very specialized piece of furniture was constructed, so the lady could position herself comfortably for easy access. And specialized devices were invented.
