I've had this thing sitting in my WIP folder for over half a year. :P About time I decided to boot it out into the real world. I may tweak a few things but it's mostly done. I'm still having problems calibrating my monitor so chances are you're seeing this image darker than I intend it to be seen. I don't know what to do about that aside from spending 400$ I don't have on a better monitor. -__O The color space on this !@#$%^&*ing crappy HP 2010i sucks.
Anyway, I'd love to hear your interpretations of what is going on in this painting or any stories you could invent about these characters. I've already got my own ideas but I'm curious about yours. :3 Also, I've hidden some not so subtle symbolism throughout the picture. I'd love to see if you guys can pick up on it. >83

And as far as what I take from this; The extra vivid colors of the trailing flowers behind the dragon's head make it appear as if the fantasy world is following it and with the face so well hidden it has this "if you dare to look beyond what -is-" sort of feel. Depending on who you talk to, there can be a certain risk in daring to look deeper at things, as if magic/imagination itself can be too intoxicating of dangerous. Sooo there's my thoughts on it. :)
Well if I were to write a story based on this pic. It would be how those creatures wandered and spread new life wherever they went. The little one in the center trying to concentrate to bring up a flower or three after the one on the left, parent, had demonstrated a little first. The one on the right, other parent, gently coaxing the center pup while holding back the initial effects of its mates powers so a nice spot in the center was left not barren and not flush. The perfect spot for a pup to train on. :3 Later on, after having successfully made a few daisies, they all went to find some marshmallow moss as a treat for their cubs' successful first day of training.
Oh My! Once again you've proven how amazing you are. I almost missed the dragon's head at first (If dragon it was, that is)
Will you explain the symbolism you spoke of for us who can't quite get it even if it is not too subtle. I'd rather like to know what I'm missing, even if it is embarrassing to admit.
PS Froggie looks like he has a pair of rabbit type chompers to me. I like that idea, even if it isn't what is happening there.

Danke. :3 And yes, frog has bucky teefs. I know froggie don't tend to have bucky teef but dis on does. :B And instead of ribbit-ribbit, he says herp-derp herp-derp!
As for the symbolism, On the right side of the canvas, notice the lack of flowers and color. Also that the sun shines through brightly there. On the right side, notice how everything is very colorful, dark, and strange. There is also the wyrm which the pup is poking in the face and the other wolf is standing on. I purposely made this to be interpretable but personally, I see this as symbolism about how scary it can be to try new things.

This blinded me with beauty! o man what i'd give to look at this all day. I really wish i had the time to write a story for you XD a lot of symbolism of new coming from old, and definitely coming of age. everything must come to an end and begin anew. Brilliant detal just have to say that this picture isn't worth 1000 words, but more like 10000.
^__^ Danke. I didn't mean I wanted people to write an actual story. XD That would be unreasonable of me. As someone who writes (unprofessionally and way too purple-prosey to ever be any good) I know how long it can take to write even a relatively short RP post (for me, that is about 3 paragraphs :P). What I mean is like.... more of a story brief.
For example, the story I came up with is that the striped yonderwolves are fleeing from an incursion of strange, deadly vines that poison the air and and choke the land. They are utterly helpless to fight against this bizarre menace, even with their very powerful magics. Falf, the one on the left, believes he can reawaken an old family friend, a powerful guardian who has often helped them in troubled times. The earthwyrm is very ancient and very powerful but also benevolent and particularly predisposed towards Falf who has proven himself to be an unusually valorous and altruistic creature. Unfortunately, the wyrm has been slumbering for a long while. Falf does not know if he can wake him this time.
Haroo, the pup, is inquisitive, intrepid, and overeager to witness the much talked about majesty of a great earthwyrm. Araff, the mother, apprehensively lingers off to the side. She is the knowledgeable one, the skeptic, the thinker, and her experiences have taught her to be cautious, especially of such powerful creatures as earthwyrms.

yeah i know XD the last statement i made was a play on the saying a picture is worth 1000 words, and that this picture was so good its worth way more than that ^^ I wasn't goin to write a story, but since i am honored that you replied, and for taking you time to do so, I will write a little somethin for you when I have the time.
I continued blinking, trying to clear the dust that must have somehow gotten into my eyes from the old book that had been in my hands. I blinked again and again โฆ but nothing of what I saw changed or went away.
I was in โฆ another world? No that could not be it. Reading a few lines aloud from an old supposedly โenchanted bookโ in a cramped and crowded little bookstore down an off-to-the-side sidestreet -- no, that was impossible.
Maybe the dust had been some sort of hallucinogenic drug left over from โฆ well, left over from somewhere and sometime else. It would all go away in a minute or two.
In the meantime, I just watched, breath-taken by the fantastic creatures who, after giving me but a momentโs brief notice, continued moving leisurely around the fantastic multi-colored landscape of flowers sprinkled with tiny flitting jewel-like butterflies.
Was it the wind blowing through some still-hidden chimes somewhere โฆ or was that the natural music of the place itself?
I suddenly realized that I had a silly smile on my face from what I saw โฆ and also realized that deep down inside I was silently hoping that I would never leave this magical place.

I wish I could do this kind of highly detailed background. It makes mine look like a 3 year old did it.
As for the calibration, have you ever considered a hardware calibrator? I have an older model of the Spyder Color Calibrator from Datacolor. That worked like a charm. I can't use the one I have because it puts too much green in the color profile. Sometime, I want ot get a newer one.

Not as talented as you. I used a wide variety of filters to cheat on the look of rocks and other materials. The incredible amount detail is astonishing. From the grass with the orangish highlights to the fine trickling little waterfalls, it could take me years just to pull something like this off.
I wish I had the time to practice doing something like this. But alas, my job sucked the art life out of me. I actually doze off when sketching when I used to not doze. Yet, I soldier on.

It's a tad pricey (and really, a better monitor would be good by itself too) but I saved up and got this and it has proven to be absolutely invaluable, and nothing I'm using it for is nearly to the caliber you're doing. I'd recommend splurging and getting one.

This... This is so awesome... So much detail, and... and...
*faints and falls into an untidy pile of bunny on the floor...*
Too good to describe, lol.
It does look too dark to make out much of the detail unfortunately (like people are saying there's a dragon hidden in the rocks? I can't see the rocks clearly enough, they're in silhouette).
But I think that's actually to be blamed on my own monitor, which is kind of old and probably on the way out. Images always appear much much darker on my screen, even with the brightness and contrast both turned up as high as they'll go.
The faulty video hardware on this wreck of a PC doesn't help matters either.

Yep, I'm pretty sure it's my monitor where the fucked upness lies.
Can't even play some games on it (the ones set in dark locations) because I can't see a thing on the screen, lol.
But the detail I can make out on this looks amazing, and I just saved a copy to look at again in the (probably distant) future when I get a new PC and a new monitor and can see it properly!
