Value is a matter of context. In our world, this book would maybe go for a couple dollars at a used book store. In Herman's world, scientists would pay millions to read it, and religious fanatics millions more to burn it.

Actually, ToS used the old "misunderstood secret knowledge" angle three times: The Omega Glory (Cohm & Yanks); Patterns of Force (literal Nazis in outer space) and... A Piece Of The Action (Pre-Prime-Directive cultural pollution via a book called "Chicago Gangs of the 1930s").

The "ancients" are about as wise as a sack of rocks. We've problems a plenty, can't figure how to fix it even though theres the tech, the people and knowledge because the all mighty dollar says "Changing anything for the better costs; so don't do it"

Interesting concept.... Would the creation of anthros of your world be from genetic manipulation, evolution or viral outbreak wiping out real humans then mutating the animals anthropomorphic? Personally I think the most feasible would be a global war broke out, wiping humans out or forced them off planet and then the animals genetically evolved over time building the tech to the level they have now since most human tech is pretty much gone now because of time passing.....
heh, reminds me of an old adventure game called Inherit the Earth..."Long before we came to exist, the Humans ruled the Earth. They made marvelous things, and moved whole mountains. They knew the secret of Flight, the secret of Happiness, And other secrets beyond our imagining."
