Better Shot of the same critter. This was shot with my 17-70mm lens. Same flash set up but you can see how there is no lens flare. I'll figure out the lens flare issue eventualy and will go back to trying better then 1.1 macros. Hugs all!

well when I was little I wouldn't want to go any were near one of these things... But once I saw one after I was older and heard it get upset and make that noise It brought back memories of when I was a kid. Light bulb went off in my head. Ooooo So that's what the heck that thing was so many years ago that scared me so much... Awww they're not that bad...
Sounds like the ones I grew up with. Now that you mentioned it, they had a mostly black camo look on their thorax (shoulder part between head and abdomin). They were powder like grey under neath and had green and clear wings. top of the abdomin was black. Eyes were not red. And the green on the wings was the same shade of green as the color used on interstate highway direction signs.
They were my favorite bug when I was a kid. Use to catch them all the time when I could...They are quick bugs.
The colors were different on the ones where I grew up. Instead of black with orange wings, they were grey with green wings...a much prettier bug.
When ever I'd catch one, it would sound off with a long, "NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA". I use to think that was so cool...and still do. It's only the males that sing. I would hear them in the trees sounding off, "NA NA NA NA NA NA NA". And at sunset, a bunch of them would give that long "NAAAAAAAA" sound. They drink fluid from trees the same way a mosquito drinks blood. I observed one doing that once on an elm tree when I was 11 years old.
