For my love, Siboney. She is an amazing friend and human being. She also makes freaking awesome characters who are fun to draw!
This is her post-apocalyptic character, Elka and her dog, Frank. The doberman was referenced, as I am not very confident yet with animals, but this was a great chance to work on that! Oh yea, and I LOVE drawing weapons. I have a weapon book for references at home and I always like an excuse to draw weapons, so bring them on! This is an M240 she is holding. I wanted to look up something cold war era to suit the characters timeline.

The M240 is a wise choice, but it's still being used! In fact, it's replacing the M-60! It's a derivative of the FN_MAG, and is ,safe to say, mor reliable than the M-60.
I think that she would need a belt, a knife, and a canteen of some sort.
As to the dog, you have the proportions about right, but the shoulders are kind of messy. as in a human figure, the Skeleton supports the anatomy and proportions. Learn the skeleton, even a rough approximation, and the rest of the animal will fall into place.
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the advice on the dog! I will definitely have to go back to basics and start with skeletal anatomy of various animals. It is just an area I have never specifically worked in, might as well start now!
And I heard that it was possibly going to be replacing the M-60! My friend (who commissioned this piece) simply said her character had a rifle, but not what type and I needed something cold war era, which is why I choose the M240. Granted it is a machine gun, but I wanted something that would stand out. My favorite is the WWI-II era BAR, but that is just me and was a little too early a period for her character.

Well for Cold War, early, you could have gone with an M-14, or some such, but the 240 is just delicious overkill.
Pellnty of Dog Skeleton Ref on Google Images, Draw from those and you will get it down in a day or so. You alreadyhave your fundamentals fairly strong on your humans, this should be a piece of cake.

I wanted a little bit of overkill...you know, make her more badass and of course, I just happen to like how they look. :p
And thanks for all the suggestions/tips, I will totally be taking a day out to start some practice on canines...I honestly should do this for all species to get the basics down. Might set up a schedule for it.
