So, I've got some spies that let me know when people are using my artwork on yiffy RP sites, usually about every other day, and I find myself putting in ticket after ticket to have them taken down (btw, Thank you F-List's admin team, you guys have been really easy and wonderful to work with). I am not okay with people using my artwork without permission unless they're the commissioner of the piece (Commissioners have final say, though)
So, one day, I get a report of someone using Icee without permission, and I let her know. She knows my plight, so we came up with this. And it was good. I still think it'll get stolen by some moron. (EDIT: It did. Some [redacted] on DA flipped, traced and recoloured it within 24 hours )
"Hey Strype, I want a shirt like that!"
And if anyone sees this on an RP site, note me, please, so I can take care of it

The title kinda threw me off, though I guess you're saying anyone who shares this is asking for repercussions, :P
But ANYWAY...makes me think of the comic that Jollyjack did - http://jollyjack.deviantart.com/art.....lity-103833797
There is that truth though that once something gets out there, people WILL share it if they so choose. Trying to track it down is almost a job in itself.

I hate that shit. If you're too lazy to draw your own, too cheap to buy it from someone, and too stupid to understand that it's NOT YOURS.....
No hope for these types. I see this crap quite frequently on forums. Someone will straight-up crop and paste a pic of their favorite thing EVAR, and claim it as theirs..... Screw you, you cheap, unethical fucks.
Honestly, half the problem is underage users creating profiles to get to porn...... and desperately selfish people who can't understand the word "no".

Both of which are fucking stupid as hell. Too stupid to even remotely understand the time, effort, blood sweat & tears it takes to not only make an image but to get as good as someone like strype in the first place, and too selfish and lazy to care. There's a special place in hell for art thieves, I tell you now.
I used to take official art and recolour it - when I was 10 years old. I stopped after like a month because I realized actually drawing it myself is more fun anyway but I don't remember one person telling me it was wrong to do.

dafuz? Seriously? How could no one tell you it was wrong? Okay. (Foxy decides that kids need a stronger sense of Right and Wrong.)
Right:
Kindness, patience, compassion, caution, caring, respect, courage(to stand up for what you believe in spite of being scared stiff.)
wisdom, love, forgiveness, mercy, perseverance.
-Letting it go, even though it pisses you off no end.
-Giving back to the people around you who have helped you grow and mature as a person.
Wrong:
selfishness, megalomania, arrogance, dishonesty, laziness(Except on warm sunny Sundays when it's just to nice to not sleep out on the lawn), self-entitlement
-I want what I want when I want it. (never mind that I haven't earned it yet.)
-Memememememememeeee
-If you don't like and love me and everything I do, fuck off.
-Stealing
-lying
All these.... well, you get the picture.

Hey, I'm 18. It's been a long, long time since I did all that. I'm not even into the stuff I was into anymore, nor on those websites or nothin. I just find it odd I did it for months and nobody said anything to me. They should've, for sure. I just thought that I'd make friends if I was good at art, but you know I was 10 and I didn't understand anything yet. I've made real friends for the right reasons now.
This is one of the most clever ways to deal with this I have seen. Plus it makes me smile. I havent seen anyone using any of my characters but its something I always think could happen.
Some of them I would be kind of eh about but if it happened with one like Jason (sketchy looking unicorn in my icon) I would probably have an aneurysm.

The funniest thing over... "I'm being used for YIFF RP..." Yiff... it's so funny people still use such an annoyingly cutesy name for sex. I can only imagine the reaction should someone yell out "YIFF ME HARD!" when having sex. :P It'd be like, insta-un-boner and WTF. lol. I think that'd be a serious relationship redefiner.
One day I'll have enough money to proudly commission her from you- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10528693/
And love making people take down the art without my or your permission.
MWUAHAHAH IT'S THE PERFECT PLAN.

OH BOY I CAN'T WAIT TO PUT THIS ON MY FLIST PROFILE!!!!!
Lol.
This is cute, and a pretty clever idea! As a roleplayer, myself, I was quick to dash to F-list and throw together things for my own characters, and quickly have them verified once I found out you could do such a thing.
Better safe than sorry, yeah? I know there are plenty who don't do the RP, thing, and this is a hilarious method to, well, bait out the thieves into properly being handled!

So You look for a picture of a really cute character then take said pic to RP site and say
"This is what I look like!" right?
*SMH* Horny dweebs who cant draw, and dont have the money for even a miniscule commission.
I wonder....if a artists of substandard talent (i.e. me) offered free pics would this cut down on the number of image thefts.....

Well, I wouldn't call your stuff substandard. But even if you did give out free stuff, there will always be RPers taking whatever they find attractive, which is annoying as hell. Really, the only way to prevent it is to report it on an individual basis, or I simply don't make my work public at all, which is you ask me, ain't worth it cuz I live for this stuff.
My hope is that perhaps persistent opposition to character theft will lead to a change in RP site culture where it becomes taboo to do that kind of bullshit. It's probably optimistic, to the point of naivety, but hey, why not try?

If I were an artist I really wouldn't give a fuzz if people pulled that kinda bullshit. I mean really if someone's going to take/use/steal your art/photos/creations. One will feel the need to protect their things, but now in this age you can only do soo much. Honestly I could care less if people used my characters, sure ill be mad ect or w/e but everyone knows where they came from if they know me. Though on the subject of when its art theft as in someone took my character and its design and altered it to say its their own work and possibly sell it ya your damn right im going to pursue them until justice is served upon them. If there's anything to get upset about it is just that, people that are stealing art in the gain to make money off of your hard work deserve an ass kicking, wether its tracing, claiming a character that doesn't belong to as your own is just straight up crooked. I cant take it when those two things aren't attacked after more then some dude/chick putting your char on a site, rping with it and such, I could really care less. As this is the webspace shit like that will go down when your awake or asleep it just doesn't matter, be focused on those that are making money off of your hard work as the bigger fish out there are more important.
Well, I do give a fuzz about this kinda thing. I've seen it happen where someone's gone off pretending to be me or someone I've done work for, and going off and doing some bizarre shit or have conned people while wearing our faces, and the shit always comes back to us one way or another, whether someone directly blaming us for their shit, or our fursonas becoming associated with some bizarre fetishes due to the actions of RPers who felt that since a character was posted online they're "free game".
Not everyone's gonna know that that RPer isn't me or someone I've drawn for. They're just another face they liked on E621 or something, or in some cases they know exactly who they're pretending to be, because they -want- to experience being someone the community knows or admires but don't have the creativity or personality to do it by themselves. And they see absolutely nothing wrong with this. And I'd like to see that change

I understand that,I was mearly pointing out that this is the internet and identity theft runs wild and a muck in this digital space we enjoy soo much. You can only fight it for so long till you realize its a never ending battle. You of all people I would expect to know this by now. Im not trying to argue with you or saying you should give into those fucks, Im simply stating there could be a better way to approach the situation maybe even have a debate about it with your closest artist friends and find a strategy that can reduce such indecencies around you. Remember however code can be bended to anyone's will here, if they truly want something they see they will have no problem doing what it takes to obtain it. It's only up to you to make the most logical decisions that best help you take care of things in a civil manner as we are not mindless animals figuratively speaking of course.
I can't boast a lot of furry-fandom specific popularity; mostly because I actively avoid it <3.
But in my online circles, sure I've had my characters and their references copied and used.
(even game/account/Instant messenger names copied)
All it's ever taken is an offical notice on my main site, stating where I usually hang, and what I usually do/not do, to fix the problem.
I mean, I'd assume your fans check your main page pretty regularly?

There's a role play site that's pretty much chalk full of people using art that isn't theirs, or theirs by commission. Granted most do stick a comment below it to say it's not their shit ( and some even tell who it does belong to ) but not everyone is that nice. Like you said someone could pretend to be you or someone you worked with in the past, it's not that hard really and I run into people all the time who try to claim the work is theirs. Most recently I ran into a Kitty Flame imposter who swore up and down they drew every last piece. God forbid someone decides to scam people by posing as an artist, all of a sudden you'll get emails or notes asking where the art is or where their refund is.
I've seen that happen to Cooper, horribly enough. Other highlights include an angry mob going after her for an imposter who took commissions in her name, and a scorned lover who was supposed to meet up with an imposter at a train station and they never showed up. And these RP site peeps wonder why artists get mad...
And yeah, there's a lot of good RP site peeps who use the pics as rough examples, give credit where it's due, and in many cases take the pics down upon request without any fuss. Those peeps are alright.

Um.. excuse me... Was looking through your gallery (awesome, btw X3) and I saw this.
You mentioned someone took this and put it on dA?
Would you maybe have any tips on how to get someone to take down something they stole (on dA, I mean)?
Just because.. the person didn't steal my artwork per-say, but they stole my persona; and renamed/slightly altered him in a bunch of different pics.
I tried to reason with her, even offered to help come up with her own character... but she blocked me, so I'm kind of stuck...
And the dA admins say I don't have a good enough reason for them to take them down
(This did happen nearly a year ago; though it still irks me because that particular persona "is" me X/)
But aside from that.
This is a really cute/funny picture
And her hair and eyes are beautiful <3
Er.. sorry if I rambled at all, also...

Seriously people need to just grow up and stop stealing other peoples art, just because they can't draw things themselves or even try doesn't make it right to take someone elses work. I'm no pro with what I draw, but at least I try to draw in my own style when I have time, hopefully people will stop taking things that don't belong to them some day, till then they will continue to take other peoples hard work and claim it as their own. A few friends of mine have had the same problem with some of their art as well.
I guess it comes down to basic respect. I mean, it's pretty obvious, the ones who will use the art to proclaim they're someone they're not, such as the original artist or the actual owner of the character are the ones I really get upset about. When it comes to "this is what they'd look like" cases, I think it's more about having the basic respect to ask the owner and the artist first. Then it comes down to the owner and artist's opinion on the matter. I personally don't approve of using stuff I personally own, because that's my preference, but if, say, someone were to ask permission from the owner of someone who has commissioned me and they say they're alright with it, I'll stand by the character owner's decision, even if it's something I drew.
I've actually noticed a few of your characters/pics on sofurry.com and other sites on occasion. Not only you but other artist's work as well. It's always irked me too.
I'll keep an eye out for your stuff strype, as well as any other artist's work that I recognize.

I can't understand people who _buy_ predesigned character, not to mention stealing one.. RP character is something that represents some part of you, of your mind, of your world view (or your ideal)... Stealing this and pulling it on yourself is like stealing someone's else panties, just weirder..
It really would have been appreciated if you listed that on your account though....
Went to F-list and used an image on yours once a few months back(Arctic fox/ or white wolf holding some sort of rifle). Almost got the account disabled before I finally figured out it was one of your images that was removed. Fortunately for me someone helped me sort it out, delete the image, and continue on...
I understand and respect your artistic rights and would have happily removed the image myself. It's just that none of your accounts nor your posts had mentioned that. I know now not to use a Strype image, but it caused me a lot of trouble that could have easily been evaded with a simple notice on the original post.
I know some people will do it anyway, but most of us (I hope) don't want to do anything that is against our favorite artists' wishes.

well, the issue is that many of the peeps who take my images are yanking it from E621, and in a lot of cases they also take images and remove my signature by cropping the image. I'd have to bog down the image with big, loud watermarks that say "do not use without permission" in the middle of the image itself just to prevent that cropping, and I personally hate when people are forced to do that because it takes away from myself and others enjoying the image. Watermarks suck!
I recognize that in most cases it's peeps like yourself that have borrowed the image because it's approximately what you were looking for in describing a character, and I'm not really bothered too much by that. I know it's an honest mistake, so I just poke the mods to have it taken down, or I'll note the person and ask politely if they've put on their profile that they'll take it down at the artist's request. It's the assholes who remove the signatures or even start claiming that they're the owner of the character or even that they're the artist who drew the pictures that get my blood boiling, and I'm pretty certain that if I simply add "do not redistribute" to the description in the comments it will be thoroughly ignored.

I do agree that watermarks suck. I've done a few edit jobs myself. (Always leave in the image a visible credit to the original artist and a sign that I edited it if I do. ) Spent an hour tracking down an original artist to a pic I found on e621 before editing it just so I could add credit.
I do suppose it is sad most people will ignore and use anyway. I'll admit myself I've only done one personal request for permission to someone on the account they were an oekeki artist who I considered not distinct enough to be recognised as someone else's.
In all honesty my only qualm with the whole ordeal is I like the "politely asked to take it down" rather than "poking the mods first" But I understand if you went on to contact each and every offender you would end up with a lot of work. All I can say is good luck in your search, but hopefully more people will get asked, and then shut down after they refuse rather than simply being shut down.

The contradictory nature of online art is that, nowadays, it is the best way to promote one's talent, but you also cannot be mad about it being used by others when you present it publicly. Honestly, people should give credit where it is due, but then why is this art removed from sites like e621, where credit IS given? Saw that Strype's art was gone from there, so I came here and downloaded newest stuff. How is that different? Hell, e621 tends to have better categorization and way better tagging than FA. I'm just saying that you really hurt your audience when you treat them like thieves for going to one site over another.
Well, you see when I asked a lot of the people who were using my art without permission (mostly RPers on F-List) where they'd gotten it from, they almost universally said E621. I'd never put it up there myself, that was other people tossing that up, again, without my permission. When I removed my work from E621, suddenly I noticed that the problem cleared right up, and now I barely ever find anyone using my work without permission.
And do you know why I don't appreciate people using my work? Because I'm working for people who spent damned good money on art of characters they created and have a deep love for and/or a personal connection with, and most of them don't really appreciate that art showing up on roleplay sites, with the characters renamed and given completely different (and often sex-slave) personalities. It's like someone cloning your family or yourself, lobotomizing them and putting them to work in a brothel. And seeing as these people were kind enough to commission my services with their hard-earned money, I'm much more strongly inclined to defend that work on their behalf, even if that offends a handful of little twerps who feel entitled to use my stuff for their own purposes without showing any respect to myself or the owners of the characters in question while they type-fuck eachother

I agree with you that changing or redrawing characters without permission is wrong. I suppose I was hung-up on the wrong point. Regarding the concern of reuse, I'm not sure why it is so hard to ask. I would not put it past a lot of people to take the easy route, but even I use other people's art occasionally in relation to story ideas and I always ask. I have never been told "no", but I would respect the artist if they discouraged my use of their art. I am not in any real position to sell my own work or my services, but I would hope that taking my work would never happen without my permission. Again, the difficulty is that we are on the internet, not at a symposium. You can discourage and work against theft, but the only true preventative measure is to remove it all together and that is counter-productive. I suppose I could focus my earlier point by just saying that people on here often refer to places like e621 as though they are lesser than FA. Especially because of the categorization, tagging, and amount of art there, I have found many beautiful works. Honestly, I think I was first introduced to your work there, along with many others'. Art theft is, indeed, wrong and there is no excuse for not asking permission. However, those like us who appreciate such "unconventional" art make up a small portion of society. That being the case, it is right to place blame where it is deserved, but we should be careful not to judge entire groups based on the mistakes of few.
Yeah it's really annoying when they just "ASSUME" they can use it, even if you state, copyrights, and that they have no permission to reupload, use whatever they still do it..
I get that they might not have money, but RP is mostly immagination.. use it to create a character and don't just steal one and pretend your them.
