No, the original Birdo was a crossdresser.

Sorry, but I'm just really tired of people doing that. It's like, yeah, we all know there's some big controversy over her gender even though Nintendo has made a pretty clear series of retcons, you don't get points for bringing it up.

This was a comment from 2013 that I forgot I ever made. That being said, yeah, the Japanese version said her name's Catherine and she wants to be called Cassie because it's cuter, but I was more talking on an "as far as the localization is concerned" note.
