This is Rolo, he's the oldest of my five ferrets and is a beloved member of our family. On Sunday we were in the garden and we noticed he was having difficulty using his back legs. We observed him and made a vet appointment for as soon as we could. Despite improving and starting to use his left leg he is still having a lot of difficulty with his right and his balance is severely impaired.
He had his appointment today and the vet is certain he has a spinal injury. Sadly in order to find out how badly he has injured his spine he requires several xrays which means sedation and he will also require pain medication and anti inflammitaries. This costs money. Money we don't have...
JUST for the tests he needs to see if his condition is treatable will be approx £250, we do not have the money for this right now and the sooner he is seen the better. This is just to see if he can be helped without major surgery but I WANT to give him a chance and not just give him a needle. It would be cruel for me to not even see if he can be helped.

hind limb paralysis in ferrets is more often weakness than a problem with the spine... that said the latter is possible but fairly rare. I would help out if I had any extra money, but until I get paid my wallet is empty. Ferrets are my favorite, and when mine was very sick everyone was very supportive.

anyone who lives locally to me is welcome to come and see him for themselves, any vet documentation I get I will also be willing to post online. As the visit was a consult and no documentation was given to me by the vet I currently have nothing I can post here - I will not however be posting video of my sick animal just to please people.

I was there when Rolo's legs went wonky, and when Shirik returned my catbox after taking him to the vets in it. I was there when she broke down on my doorstep.

maybe you should keep opinions to yourself. Theres a little thing called HOPE that pet owners always strive for with their friends too. There ARE some decent people in the world, some even having shared the same heart breaking exp. Some of us love to help our friends. Shirik has a LOT of friends too.
I've not had a donation pool for any of my pets, but I have had one for my partner's car after it got broken in an shit stolen and everyone really helped.
Point is of this reply is that PEOPLE DO CARE, its not a fucking scam unless the artist is known to do so, people WANT to help and WANT to do a good thing by helping others.

I feel bad for the ferret and would help if I could but I must URGE people to THINK before owning pets. IF you cannot afford to keep them and care for their medical bills, DON'T HAVE THEM! It's cruel and unfair to put a pet through pain and difficulty just to be fun and pretty for you if you can't afford it.

She has managed to take care of her ferrets, very well might I add, and you don't know the whole story behind why shes asking - rolo was insured, they weren't expecting to need to pay extra :/

Everything her ferrets need and more is provided for them, just because she cannot pay for the excess on the insurance or for the consultation (which most people think is covered in there policy) DOES NOT make her a bad pet owner.
Having the insurance in the first place proves that she is a responsible pet owner, please, as others have stated, if you do not know the full story why not ask before posting?

Yeah, if you knew how much care and love those ferrets get from Shirik, you wouldn't be saying that. Rolo is insured, but exotic pet insurance in the UK costs a bomb and is ridiculous in regards to payouts and excess charges.

Insurance only goes so far, especially for exotics and I'm not suggesting that Shirik is cruel to her animals or anything of the sort. I simply believe that you should put money aside into a savings account each month to cover these issues. If she had put £25 a month (most people spend more than this on alcohol or soda drink) then in just one year she'd have had enough to cope with the cost of this bill easily.

As I've said, I feel bad for the pet and if I was in a position to help Rolo, I would.
If she went to CF for business reasons, i.e. to earn money, then this would logically mean she would have made more than she spent to attend (Attendance with hotel stay plus travel = at least £300) and therefore should not need any more money to pay for the animal?

Just like y'all, I'm allowed an opinion and my opinion is that animals need owners who can afford to keep them. If I owned a pet, I'd ensure that I could pay for emergency treatment every month, if I can't afford to pay out £250 a month on my pet, I can't afford to own that pet. Simple as.

My posts aren't negative. All I did was give my sympathies, tell her I wish I could help but I can't, then told the rest of the community to see this as a warning, that pets get sick so think hard about the costs before getting one.

You've been nothing but a bit of an asswipe here to be honest. You shared your opinion, that should have been it. Instead you've been replying to everyone here and pretty much making assumtions about the poor girl's income and having been to a con to work recently. Some of us are freelance, and work at cons. But thats none of your business, and I personally think you've crossed the line and have been extremelly insensitive and rude. So please do be 'done' with it.

You realize there are certain procedures that aren't covered by insurance?
Dental bills for cats and dogs (at least) aren't usually covered in the basic insurance, and those bills reach -astronomical- prices.
Shit happens, and I know from experience (1 cat getting ill, paying that bill with savings, then -literally- 3 days later the dog has an accident while out on a walk) that not all things can be planned for.
Please think before playing the self-righteous card (cause she's obv treating them as toys amirite?) or typing out passive aggressive comments on twitter. Have the decency to take it directly to her.

i think the best thing you could do is apologise for bringing up things that were not needed at this moment in time. if u donated then good for you. and maybe think about where you post your opinions. alot of emotions and feelings getting sturred up in here like many of us do when someone or something we care about gets hurt.

I would support if I could but all my sympathy to you in this situation, is there no way your vet can set up a pay plan for you? Our vet was able to when my dig needed an emergency op if you haven't asked I would urge to to ask your vet for support if not can the pdsa perhaps help?

I am a ferret owner also.....and I haven't read every post on this thread, but has he been blood tested for a condition called Insulinoma? Ferrets of around 5 years + are very susceptible to this and rear leg weakness is a very common sign of this illness.
If you want to talk further about this please feel free to PM me, I have 10 ferrets, of which 3 have had insulinoma so I'm very clued up on it.
