I originally wrote this as part of my 'Hidden Place' blog, in the 'What is...' series; a collection of articles designed to concisely describe an aspect of our world, or my life. It struck me today that it would be a good thing to share with FA.
In this case, it has often seemed to me that there is a dearth of what I would call good, readable articles introducing people to what furry is; most just tap out a dictionary definition, hastily add that ITS NOT ABOUT SEX, and move on to describe how they interact with the community, without giving the broader picture.
The original article is at: http://ccroft.livejournal.com/221278.html , but please do comment here as well If this should spark commentary, I should be all the happier!

Wow.
That has to be the most open-ended series of statements I've ever seen. Your all-inclusive statements were skeletal at best, which is refreshing given those more direct and innacurate ones from the media, channers, or even other furs. You also managed to from there go in depth, still paying very good attention to never placing a label on anyone specific.
Of course, after checking your blog, I think you could safely add the line: "But no matter what anyone says about furries, there will always be someone who disagrees, and will vocalize it."

I can honeslty say that even though I don't know you...I respect you for writing this article.I have had so many people at school get on my case because I am a fur. They stuiff like why would you want to dress up as an animal, and then go out and hhave group sex? all I can say is do the research and you will find thats not always how it is...the stupid CSI episode aired and thats where too many people got their opinions of the furry fandom. Thanx millions for writing this!! is there a way to like link to it on my user page or something?
Bravo! Very well said!! I particularly liked "That whatever your foibles, downsides, defects or faults, you will find acceptance in furrydom. The cracks painted over with a fresh coat of scales or fur." There is an amazingly high incidence of "different" people among furrys. I have high performing Asperger's syndrome. The US Centers for Disease Control says that it is so rare that they can not estimate its incidence, except that it is much less than 0.1%. I had never met another Asper until joining FA - and now I have several Asper friends. I really think that most of my friends here fit some sort of diagnostic category - but that is perfectly OK. After all, furrys don't have to be 100% "normal human", and few or no furrys think the less of us for it. Thanks!!
This is a very good article and an interesting one as well. I have been asking the same question as well on what it is to be a furry and you've given a nice input in this article. I'm still a new found furry to begin with as I'm a snow leopard cause my ex brought me here to be one as he is.
It is rather nice to actually be one as we potray ourselves to be the animal that we like. I like your definition. Ever thought of putting this article up to public?
