You're right. Though actually it's reverse. Kali's mother Amanda is a natural macro, so Kali is as well, so her normal state is to be macro size, in cases like this she's actually shrinking to be the same size as her companions.
But, to avoid stretching/tearing her clothes she doesn't just change size willy-nilly, its also less disruptive on their surroundings to be a smaller size, so unless she really needs to, she tries to remain small while out exploring.
