Black, you just shaded lighter in the areas where there was more shadow, letting the paper show through instead of using darker hues. Just a guess, though

I'm going to say the paper was yellow.

nice colouring. =) looks like i nsome areas the yellow/neutral colour is showing through, so i'm guessing that was the original paper colour? ^^
