Soapstone carving of a polar bear. My second carving in stone. I am amazed myself as to how this turned out. My previous carving of the loon was fairly simple with minor attention to detail. This design has muscle structure, some facial definitions, and some serious body mass. It's about 4 inches from head to tail. The colors in the stone worked very well in the carving. The face (half hidden) is split with a very pale green on the back side. I also came across some FeS4, a.k.a. pyrite. A very strange mineral when carving something as soft as soapstone. It tended to tear into my files and sawblade. Overall, I love this piece. I believe that I have found a media that I will enjoy working with much more in the future. About 20 hours went into this.
