-The background is nice and simple, very nice for a close up, I think making it simple helps to not distract from the main objective. So, it's a good work.
-About what you wanted to express, yeah! it's a job done right! Seriously, I can imagine him still trying to wag its tail, even if he doesn't have, I mean, moving its back from side to side.
-About the colors, well they are very nice and comfortable. It's very good as it is, but how about spicying it more? try adding leaf shadows over his body, add light effects (oh! recently saw it already has on his back!) Well, try to make them more visible and add it all over the upper part of the body, not only it's back.
-I think the eyes are perfect, seems that there's no need to practice them more.
-About proportions you got it perfect as well.

And for the BG I just try to mix in the colors to blend with the Jolteon. I think blues and purples blend well with the character I figure. Your own BGs are very colorful though, especially the Quad Powers MS and the Three of Hearts ones. I think you made the colors very vibrant in those ^_^

well your leafeon was in a different pose, and its a different pokemon, with a tail too, so u cant really compare like dat >wO

and, heh, "we all knew" had a better BG than any of those 2 u mentioned ^^;

I also like the "Chocolate" and "Chu Crew" ones too, they're far more elaborate than what I can come up with ^^;

often a good simple picture can attract the eyes more than a detailed bad one... u kno what i mean? dat is, it depends on the general appearance of the pic, no matter if is simple or complex, dat makes it nice to look at (LilChu for example, makes incredible pics, but not all are very finely detailed, thier just good)

I thought Lilchu makes very detailed pics, though maybe not BGs so much but one day I'd like to try a more elaborate BG, similar to yours if you don't mind ^^;
