He heard the sickening crack of her skull on the rocks below. In a howl of pain and rage he leaped down to where she had finally come to rest on an outcropping of rock. He approached her broken and battered body slowly; watching carefully for any sign of life that he knew in his heart wouldn’t be there. He reached out almost not wanting to touch her, knowing that she’d be cold. He moved her hair from her face, her eyes were closed and he was a little thankful for that. Running his furred hand along her cheek a thick whine started in his throat. Suddenly he picked her limp form up and held her against him, wishing she was alive, wanting her to wrap her arms around him one more time. He nuzzled her neck before raising his muzzle in a long mournful howl. He held her tightly, how could they. The fates were so cruel to him. Giving him his mate finally after so many years only to snatch her away from him only after a few short months. He falls to his knees cradling her still. Knowing that once he let go; it would be forever, his heart hurt. Another howl issues from his throat, but is choked off by the tears that refused to be held in. No longer able to howl; he cries and wails rocking her calling her name. They had been so close; he had almost had her forever. Everything was shallow and empty now, colorless nothing held any meaning for him anymore. Unable to utter anymore sound, his throat raw he got to his feet. All that was left now was to lay his beloved to rest. Perhaps if the fates had any small sense of kindness, they would allow him to follow her soon. He had nothing left on this world now.
