Another songfic from yours truly. This time, it's a drastically different scenario.
I've made mentions in various pieces of Riou's brother, Issen. What most of you don't know, is that his brother is a Shadow Pokemon, who's only remaining desire is to die. And he plans to have his own brother (Riou) be the one who does it. This scenario is based off a brainstorm of mine, where, during/after the finals, Issen shows up at school, with the intent of killing Riou. When it becomes clear that Riou can't or won't push himself, Issen forces the decision by making what appears to be a fatal strike on Boris, making Riou think he's dead.
This causes Riou to snap, and become a Shadow Pokemon. What follows takes place in the fic, though much of the detail has been taken out for fic writing purposes.
I'm aware this is a pretty emo song choice, but I actually like the song (Yes, I like LP you sons of bitches) and the lyrics fit the moment.

What I’ve Done
His eyes were blank, emptiness there which could not be described. His mouth was set in a grim line. All the scrapes and bruises seemed to be mere blemishes. And rolling around his body, that darkness, which enveloped him from the tips of his ears, to the end of his tail and feet. He slowly raised his head up, to stare down the arena at Issen. Everyone just stared, their mouths agape, some taking steps back. It was a shocked silence that filled the room, even as Vosa swallowed nervously. “I don’t…I don’t believe it. Riou…he’s, he’s become a Shadow Pokemon?!”
There was little time for response, as Riou blurred, a trail of dust indicating his path, straight at Issen. The older Lucario barely had time to bring up his arms to block the punch that came, straight for his face, and he grabbed Riou’s fist. But it wasn’t a perfect block, not at that speed. The floor behind Issen cracked, dust throwing up as his body shook. “Incredible…so this…is your real power, Riou?” He said, his hands trembling, holding Riou’s fist at bay.
In this farewell
There’s no blood
There’s no alibi
‘Cause I’ve drawn regret
From the truth
Of a thousand lies
Issen thrust his arms out and to the side, knocking Riou’s fist away, even as Riou made to punch with his second hand. Issen met it with his own fist, head on, the two meeting in an impact which caused the floor to once again crack under them, the floor denting downward, cratering. He let out a grunt, as he felt the shockwave pass through him. That was too close! His arm felt numb though. All this time, his brother had been repressing this kind of strength?
So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve done
Everyone watched as Riou and Issen began to punch at one another, standing their ground. There was no semblance of defense to what they did. Their only means of blocking was when their fists met. Their hands seemed to blur, the only sound came when their fists interrupted the other’s attack. Riou looked totally unfazed by the assault. His entire expression was blank, like that of some machine.
I'll face myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done
After a few moments, the two leapt back, but their feet barely touched the ground, before they moved once again, fists and feet flying through the air to strike at the other. Their black auras clashed with their bodies, limbs used to parry, to brush aside and counterattack. Where moments before, Riou had been unable to keep up with his oldest brother, he was now matching him, strike for strike.
Everyone watching could barely keep up with the fighters, even as they zipped, appearing in a different part of the arena, only to blur after the initial hit, appearing in a different location. Occasionally the crowd would cringe as the two appeared right in front of the stands. Even the teachers were hesitant to interfere. “We cannot allow them to continue in this manner!” Perjan snapped at the principal. “If we don’t stop them—”
~And what would you suggest we do, provoke the wrath of not one, but two Shadow Pokemon? We have to wait. We have to trust that perhaps one of them will destroy the other~ The principal said, his stern gaze making Perjan back down, just a bit. His expression than softened as he regarded his subordinate. ~I want to save Mr. Hotaru as much as you do. But separating them at this point is far too risky, even for me. We have to wait~
Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands of uncertainty
“Oh man…this is crazy! Riou’s actually as good as he is now!” Tidot said, his hands clenching onto Nigel’s skirt, the latter was too caught up staring to notice. Vosa took Meghan’s hand, tightening his hand over her’s as he continued to watch Riou and Issen attack each other, his brow furrowing.
“No…Riou’s actually gotten better than Issen now.”
“What?! Is that even possible?!”
“I’ve been watching this whole time. Riou knows all of his brother’s weaknesses, but he’s never been able to exploit them, now he has the power too. It won’t be long before Issen’s defense starts to crumble.” He said, biting his lip. “What worries me is what we’ll do once that happens.” He shook his head, watching Riou smash the floor where Issen had been standing a moment before. “Even if Riou defeats Issen…do we have any guarantee Riou will come out of it? I’ve never heard of anyone going from normal to full-on Shadow before.”
Nigel clenched his hands into fists, and grabbed Vosa’s collar, shaking him. “Bloody hell, there has to be something we can do! I’m not just gunna stand here and watch as that crazy bastard turns Riou into a smaller version of himself!” Vosa took his hands, and shoved them away.
“It’s not as if we can do anything at all! Don’t you understand?! This has never happened before! In all the research I’ve done, I’ve never heard of a case like this ever happening before!”
So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve done
Their attention was grabbed once again by the fighters, as Riou’s foot met the side of Issen’s face, sending him spinning through the air, crashing to the floor, skidding a ways before he stopped. Riou didn’t wait for him to recover however. He slowly turned to the side, his legs spreading apart. One of his hands came down, parallel to his left leg, the other hand going up and back, an upward horizontal angle. Vosa didn’t even have to comment on this, though. “No way, he has the stamina to do that again, for the third time?!”
Issen pushed himself to his feet, slowly, his arms shaking. He couldn’t believe it. In his entire life, he’d never met an opponent who could so easily anticipate his every motion. It was as if his brother had become an entirely different person! His arms hung limp at his sides. They were numb, completely. He wouldn’t have been surprised if the bones were broken. He couldn’t feel anything, no pain, no fear, no anger. It was always like this for him.
But he looked up, and saw the stance his brother was taking. And he couldn’t help but smile. Indeed, his brother had mastered in only a few moments, a strength which had taken him almost a decade to fully understand. It was amazing. He didn’t do anything to block the attack, even as Riou suddenly appeared before him, as if he’d ignoring the distance between them. He doubted that he could’ve blocked, even if he’d wanted to. His arms refused to respond.
Riou’s fists felt more like mere pressure than anything else as he was struck, over and over again, barraged by the reckless assault. He heard a rib crack, felt blood blossom up in his mouth, and felt his arm snap. His body shook, his legs trembling with the effort of keeping himself upright. While his brain wasn’t aware of the pain, he knew his body was still receiving the messages. When the pressure let up, he managed to look down, and see Riou’s fist coming back, clenched tight, light coming up from between his fingers.
This was it. Even as he watched Riou’s hand start towards him, as if in slow motion, he knew what this meant. He could barely bring the corners of his mouth up, even as Riou’s fist met the spike of his chest, and crushed it, destroying it utterly. His brother’s attack would not be stopped. He felt the resistance, and then felt the resistance give way. He heard a collective group of cries, intakes of breath, and gasps from those around him. He managed to look down, and could see Riou’s forearm, impaled through his chest.
He knew he was dead. Riou pulled his arm out suddenly, and there was a wet sound, and a sudden relief of the pressure Issen felt. He was surprised that still didn’t feel any pain. Perhaps his body was so numb, even his nerves had given up. Either way, he felt his strength leave him, and he fell to his knees, looking up at his brother. Riou stood, tall and powerful, his fist held out, the steel claws that formed from the spike still glowing, splattered with his own blood. “Oh Riou…” He breathed, feeling his vision start to fade. “You’ve finally done it…you’ve surpassed me…thank you…little brother…”
I'll face myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done
Everyone flinched when Riou dealt the killing blow. They knew it was fatal. The beating he’d dealt with his Close Combat beforehand would’ve done massive internal injuries, but the Metal Claw through the chest…Issen slumped to his knees, and fell limply forward, hitting the ground. He was dead. There was a moment of collective tension. And then it was replaced by fear. Because Riou hadn’t changed. He was still standing there, his hand still drenched in Issen’s blood.
“Oh no…if he’s still a Shadow…” Tidot said, biting his lip. His unspoken continuance was implied. Riou just stood there, looking down at the corpse of his brother, and slowly turned his head looking over his shoulder. His Aura flared a bit, and he slowly turned his body around, facing the opposite end of the arena. “Uh-oh, he’s looking this way!”
“Meghan, get behind me now!” Vosa barked, forcibly pushing the Magmar behind himself, even as his hand burst into a crackle of electricity. “Everyone, keep your guard up!” He yelled, and students started to draw back as Riou started walking, his pace slowly picking up into a full run. That was when Riou noticed that Nigel hadn’t raised his shields. “Nigel! NIGEL!! What are you doing?!”
But Nigel couldn’t hear him; he was too busy staring, even as Charla tugged on his skirt, trying to rouse him into action. All he could see was the sight of Riou, that blank look in his eyes, interrupted by something. He was in utter shock. Why was Riou’s Aura rising like that? Suddenly, he realized Riou had once again skipped the interlaying distance. He barely had time to blink as those steel claws came back. Too fast, it was coming too fast! He wouldn’t have the time to raise a shield before he was hit!
Instinctively, he squeezed his eyes shut, blood pounding in his ears as he his entire body tensed, waiting for the inevitable blow. He heard Vosa yell something even as Charla screamed from somewhere behind him. He waited…but nothing happened. He slowly opened his eyes, and almost took a step back. It was probably his shock that kept him from doing that, and saved his life. Riou was standing out, his fist outstretched, as if to strike, but it had stopped, merely inches away.
For what I’ve done
I start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I’m forgiving what I’ve done
What tore his heart was the expression in Riou’s face. His eyes were still blank, but his teeth were gritted together hard, and his entire body was shaking. He could see though, Riou was there, in those eyes. It wasn’t the monster that had just wiped the floor with Issen moments ago. There was a stark terror and agony in his eyes, and there were tears. “Nigel…san…please…get away from me…” He said, and Nigel felt his heart collapse. His best friend was desperately fighting to keep his sanity, having somehow regained it. “Please…I can’t…I can’t control it. Please, get away. Don’t…let me…hurt you!”
“Riou!”
The Lucario took one shaky step back, forcing his foot back. It was as if his own body was fighting him, even as his left arm grabbed his right wrist, pulling those claws back. Nigel could see everyone around him frozen as well, too afraid to move. They were also shocked. When had a Shadow Pokemon ever managed this before? “I don’t…want to hurt you…or…anyone else…” Riou said, his voice shaken and strained as well, as he stepped further back. He pulled his wrist back. “Please…I’m sorry Nigel-san…I didn’t mean to…I didn’t want to be…a killer…please don’t hate me!” He cried out, his voice echoing in the room.
“I don’t hate you Riou! I couldn’t! Let me help you!”
“You can’t…It’s taking…everything I have, to not kill you…” Riou said, his lips rising in a snarl. “I don’t want these thoughts…” He said, turning his wrist inward. Nigel’s eyes widened as he reached out his arm. “I don’t want to be this way anymore!!” Riou screamed, and stabbed himself, plunging his own claws right into his stomach. The scream that tore from Riou’s throat as his head went back was one of agony.
I'll face myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done
Students all over the room let out cries and yells as Riou staggered back, his open as wide as they could go as the steel claws remained embedded in his stomach, his mouth still open as he screamed. Several of them started to rise, but Perjan was quick to bar their way. “No! None of you move, he’s still Shadow! We can’t risk it!” Protests came up, shouts of denial.
Riou crumpled to his knees, his eyes shut tight as he cried, his throat raw as he screamed out his pain. He didn’t want to die. More than anything, he didn’t want to die. But he didn’t want to become Issen. He didn’t want to hurt anyone. He dug the claws in deeper as he clenched his wrist harder. The pain was the only thing keeping him from trying to strike them down. That need to extinguish their lives, to cut them apart was still so very close in his mind. He jerked the claws, and the horrific pain, and the scream he wrenched loose suppressed that desire.
He couldn’t even think through the pain, his eyes burning with tears as he whimpered, his entire frame shaking. He’d turned into a monster, just like his brother. He’d become the very thing he despised the most. And there was nothing he could do to save himself. He couldn’t purify himself, he couldn’t be saved. He could still see Boris’ corpse in the back of his mind. He wasn’t worth saving. He deserved to die, as much as the monster in him demanded that the others deserved to die as well merely for existing.
He managed to open his eyes, to see his teammates desperately trying to shove past members of the faculty, who where standing with their back to him, barring their way. Through the pain, he could barely make out what they were saying.
“Someone stop him please, he’s going to kill himself!!”
“What are you doing?! Don’t get any closer to him!”
“Did you hear what he just said?! If we don’t stop him, he’ll tear his own stomach open!”
“We can’t take the chance he’ll lash out at any of you!”
“I don’t give a shit! Let me through or I’ll blast you!”
“Don’t even try it!”
Riou could only cry out as he felt that rising lust to rend the life of them swell and he shoved the claws into his stomach, right to the hilt. The pain that lashed through make his voice crack, even as his aching, dry throat rent out another scream. He wondered if the claws would come out through the other side of him. He was all by himself now. But he didn’t want to be. He wanted someone to reach him, to make him stop. But he didn’t want to die like this. “Help…me…” he managed to wheeze. “Someone…please…help me…” He finally gathered the strength to throw back his head. “HELP ME!!” He screamed at the top of his lungs.
What I’ve done
Forgiving what I’ve done
Not a second after those words left his lips, then he felt arms around his waist, holding his arms tightly, a body pressed up against his back. He recognized the person even before they spoke, the green hands and gold ring were a dead giveaway.
“I’ll save you Riou.”
