ceegee and
kdraccoon and thus do I mutate it further. Here is several facts about the Orange Islands culture I created as back story for Vincent and his family. For those unfamiliar with the Orange Islands they're a part of the pokeverse thanks to the Anime with a large chunk of the second season set in them. I decided to take and run with them, concentrating on forming a society of Poli-poke (-wag, -whirl, -wrath, -toed) and based them off a generic Polynesian base, especially the Samoan culture. Please, ask questions if you have any.

The Orange Islands (Polipoke Edition)
- The Orange Islands are a rather warm and tropical archipelago that consists of a few dozen islands of various sizes.
- While the Islands all share similar climate and each culture developed along similar lines it would be erroneous to say the native populaces is the homogenous.
- Each island is independent and controls its own activities. The archipelago has formed a union of sorts to help better promote the needs of the islands, though day to day affairs tend to still be left with the individual islands and tribes.
- Water types dominate the native populations of the Orange Islands though in some places Normal, Flying, Dragon and in one case Fire Tribes are dominant. This does not mean other types aren’t present just less common.
- No native Ice poke tribe makes its home in the Orange Islands, however, as the climate is to warm.
- The Orange Islands are now known for their wonderful resorts as well as the export of exotic fish and berries that aren’t found anywhere else.
- The Polipoke of the Orange Islands tend to be concentrated on a stretch of four islands on the southern end of the Archipelago. While they make up four separate tribes they all acknowledge a common ancestry and interact heavily.
The Polipoke Tribes
- Each of the tribes is self governed though a council was formed early on in order to deal with disputes as well as inter-tribe relations.
- Polipoke from these tribes tend to be quite large as size is viewed as a means of determining health and wealth. Male ‘mon tend to be around six feet in height and are considered skinny if they’re under two hundred pounds.
- The council itself now helps to coordinate efforts by each of the tribes to spur on economic and social growth.
- The tribes have become fairly modern, embracing and adapting technology and ideals into their culture. They still hold onto their more important rituals and keep them “pure.”
- From time to time a High Chief will be named which is an honorific that grants barer of the title extreme respect and influence over activities in the tribes. In the past this title was more hands on, however actual power hasn’t been a part of the deal for about a hundred years.
- Currently there are two High Chiefs in the world: High Chief Hori Tellamapolou and High Chief Otona Polapmala.
Polipoke and Evolution
- Evolution is something taken quite seriously by the tribe as it’s fairly common for members to stay a Poliwhirl.
- To become a Poliwrath the applicants must undergo a series of grueling tests to prove themselves worthy. These tests include: Surfing, displays of ancient rituals such as dancing and battling. To become a Poliwrath is to proclaim oneself a warrior of their Tribe, and thus only male Poliwhirl of the Orange Island tribes are allowed to undergo the transformation.
- There has been a rash of younger Poliwrath’s undergoing evolution without these rituals due to rebellion but most still agree to do the rituals More disturbing to the elders is when a young female ‘mon rebels and evolves into one.
- Most female ‘mon who wish to become more than what might be derogatively referred to as a domestic often become Politoed undergoing a similar ritual that also includes battle testing and surfing. These Battle Maidens are treated with reverence as they are still uncommon. To many women within the tribes raising a strong family is a high honor and successful matrons are treated with great respect.
Battling and Expansion
- The Orange Islands are thought to be a “small region” and so usually didn’t receive much attention from large battle promotions.
- The first Grand Champion to come out of the Orange Islands was High Chief Otona Polapmala which helped to begin the emergence of the Polipoke of the Orange Islands being accepted in larger circles
- High Chief Hori Tellamapolou was also responsible for helping this expansion through working as a manager and mouth piece as well as a battler.
- Since then many famous battlers have come from the Orange Islands, not just from the Poli-Tribes. There have been three more Grand Champions from the region since including Hori’s own son who was a Tag Champion a number of years ago.
- Polipoke from the Orange Islands are now found all over the world and tend to group together in cities and regions they find to be suitable to their needs. Sunnyshore City, Viridian City, Cerulean City and Sootopolis City are some of the more common places to find transplants.

She's a Poliwhirl actually. She chose to stay a matron and not get involved with battling at all. Which worked out pretty well for her as she's raised two very wonderful children and also was big in helping to organize all the cousins while their fathers (and a couple mothers) were battling in the leagues.
Of course his sister, on the other hand, is still deciding, though its more on if she'll continue to honor tradition on evolving or not.
