Is Fluttershy in fact a pegasus who's afraid of heights? I don't think it's as simple as that, because-- oh, look what Discord did! Never mind.

Originally Fluttershy was supposed to be the earth pony and Pinkie Pie was to have wings (she was going to fly upside-down a lot).

I like how you portray Discord, very much like in the show he has this slight sadistic side but doesn't really seem to want to hurt people. I've often wondered how he would react if given a true tragedy that affected him.

I had a similar idea once. I had Discord give Pinkie Pie a pair of wings in one of my stories. A difference though was that he gave Fluttershy a horn as well.

Thank goodness this happened after Discord's friendship with Fluttershy the alternate timeline may have had dramatic ramifications. Oh yes and your portrayal of "friend" Discord is awesome!
