That's adorable...! Wish I could do that with colored pencils. Must practice more...

It's not only because of practice!! Professional colored pencils are made differently, so you can blend the colours. I've used regular Faber Castell (the red boxes) for years and got quite good results, but my parents got me the 36 box of Polychromos a month ago, i've been drooling for it for years, and let me tell you: they DO change your technique A LOT.

If you consider yourself proficient enough to step up a level, i'd reccomend getting a small box (or just the loose pencils you need for a piece) of professional pencils. You'll notice the difference in the feel of the materials and on the quality of your work!

This kind of piece is made possible by those. You can colour in layers: i used 3 to 5 shades of brown/gold on the dog's fur, and around the same amount of different pencils for the grass! And they blend really smoothly. Just look at how all the black parts look like ink or paint! These pencils' leads are a bit oily and quite soft.
