It was a deliberate decision to have that paw that way. It's supposed to look like Pepper has slipped and her dew claw has caught to branch. As part of that reaction the rest of the paw has curled under in an attempt to grip it. It is not a random hand, it's a paw grip, after all the dew claw is the equivalent to our thumb. I've seen animals do it, clearly I haven't represented it well enough.
That being said I rarely go back and alter pieces unless specifically requested by a commissioner. This was a personal piece so no changes will be made.
In my own defence, watch the Lion King. Specifically the scene where Scar catches the mouse. See how he can manipulate and use his paw like a hand and yet it is still a paw. That's what most of my feral characters have the ability to do.

Mm. Most of the other entires had a very split screen sort of feel (winter on one side, spring on the other) so I determined to represent it in a different way. I figured going for a swim under a bare tree is one way to do it. I have a mass of other ideas... if I get enough work done I might (MIGHT) be able to get another one done before that looming deadline.
