Okay, I just got done doing a little research. Drug-induced amnesia. It's a theripeudic method that's meant to treat psychological-trauma or For medical procedures.
So my guess is, something terrible happened and he's taking these drugs to help him cope, or he went under a life saving medical procedure and is advised to take these drugs.
Another guess is that he's abusing some kind of narcotic. Maybe rohypnol (if that's even a narcotic) because of a traumatic event!

Concensus is Alzheimers, but that's a really early onset, so I'll put my 2cents in and say it's highly unlikely to be that. Huntingdons disease, depression, PTML who knows. All will be revealed in the long term it seems! I anticipate a endearing yet wrenching ending.

If I may, either A: he has early set alzheimers or B: he has a severe type of cancer that affected the brain already. Just my guess.
