If I remember my gun history right (which is rare when I do. xD), I believe that these are the precursors to our modern pump-action shotgun. Originally, shotguns were single shot bolt-actions. Then, they started to develop a pump action that could hold more rounds, and reload them faster. The original pump-actions (the one's pictured I believe) were very unreliable, and a lot of hunters stuck with the bolt-action. However, as gun tech got better and better, so did the quality and reliability of the pump-action shotgun, improving so much that it is now the standard for all shotguns.
If I'm wrong about parts of that, I'm sorry, I tried my best. xD I hope this random bit of info helps ya out in some way.

I don't know a lot, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I want to own a good sized collection someday, but atm, I only have a 12 gauge shotgun, so I've been trying to learn about that as much as I can, hence why I knew this little bit about it. That, and I can recall the most random facts at the most random times. xD
