As promised in my journal, here he is, our little... uh... chupacabra? Believe it or not he does look better than when we picked him up on Thursday... he's had a bath (so he smells better too), had some shots, been given regular medicine, took a dump that was the size of his freaking head (how can so much come out of such a small puppy??). As you can see on the bottom right there, he reeeeally likes shoes, and pants. It would be so much cuter if he wasn't still contagious...
Anyway, despite his bad foot (all his paws are a bit odd but the right is the most noticable) he seems to be acting like a normal puppy.. he likes attention and wants to play with the alpha males, he's starting to complain when we give him his medication too. Oh and he's teething. Definitely teething...
He's also starting to respond when we call.. not running to us or anything but realising we're addressing him... which is nice.
He's due for another bath, and even though we don't like it we've opted to wait for his skin condition to clear up a bit more before we go putting braces on his legs... unless the vet says otherwise in which case we'll get right on it.
I'm still convinced he's mostly labrador.... We're still debating on names since Pestilence/Pesky and Disease aren't really nice names to call a puppy. ^.^;
The whole family has chipped in with various suggestions (alas, my vote for 'Gaspode' was turned down... and even I realise Thcrapth is just too hard to bring up repeatedly in a conversation), so far there has been no unanimous agreement.
So far so good.... can't say I don't worry though. Will likely give an update next week. Now, back to art.

The vet just said it was Scabies and gave Pesky a shot to kill fleas and mites (I think) and us some shampoos to wash him with. We have to take him in for a follow up in another week or so, and they say by then most of his fur should have grown back. He's already a perkier puppy than when we first found him.
well one thing we're unsure of is how much to feed him, I realize that while a animal is in starvation mode it's not a good idea to give them food untill they stop because they will keep eating till they make themselves sick and could lead to an intestinal blockage and surgery. with his condition i'm not sure if he'd have a good survival chance at surgery to clear the obstruction. Thankfully his belly seems to be shrinking fast so i think the worms are dying fast, hopefully the last 1 or 2 (can't remember how many are left) syringes of oral medication the vet gave us will be enough to purge his system of worms.So not having to worry about the worms in dealing with his food is a good thing.
We've been trying to give him small sized meals throughout the day. however we never know how much is too much for a small meal, I figure we can ween him back into normal eating habits once he isn't panic eating too afraid of when his next meal will be. eventually bringing him to what we feed sable, 1 to 2 cans of food combined with a cup of dry food. depending on how hungry they are, if we see they're especially hungry we'll give them a little extra food. unfortunately the amount that would be good for small meals has eluded me, what i give him usually half fills his bowl which when you look at him seems like a lot. any ideas/advice would be appreciated.

At this point, 3 feedings a day is good. on a normal puppy I'd suggest 2. after they're a year old, 1 feeding a day is best. 2 is still okay, but most dogs do great with 1.
I'd suggest, judging from his size, about a cup of food per meal. Of course that depends on the food and the dog.. But basically don't worry 'too' much about overfeeding him. He'll need the energy, and it's much more likely if you do overfeed that he'll just vomit. Very rare to have a problem like you mentioned with a puppy from overfeeding.

YAY for Gaspode, that would be an awesome name...though probably bad luck the name the poor little guy that...Maybe Lucky since he does seem to be pretty lucky that such nice people found him and are willing to do so much to help take care of him, especially after the hell he already went through.
As for assistance, well if you have any questions I can help (used to work at a veterinary hospital). I know how much pets cost, espcially after one of our cats had kidney stones last year, so best of luck.
