While moving I often had Clarice out to squick the neighbors.
Unfortunately she did not scare away any of the human raccoons, who would wander over to our pile of boxes and mistake things like our 40" TV and computers for actual garbage and try to take them. Ugh, this city... seriously.

I think the "best" ones that day was a tie between the creepy lady who admitted to peeking in our windows to see what sort of furniture we had that she might be able to steal/buy when we moved and the guys in the ugly van who, despite my doing a slow head-shake to imply gtfo, got out of their van and were about to make off with our bicycles ("Sorry, we thought it was garbage!").
Yes. They really did. I think it was mostly that they honestly thought it was garbage ("moving day" was on garbage day this year, yay); they all went away when me and my three other helpers stood up and gave them evils. There's a lot of trash collectors in the area who drive around on garbage day to look for "treasure" and while I applaud all this rrecycling, I don't really like living next to the guy with 13 broken TVs on his lawn.
Hahaha, you got the reference! We wanted to call her Lecter for that snakey-thing/nice Chianti, but seeing as how she's a girl we thought Clarice would be more appropriate :3

Heh, same here. I called the local trash collectors so they could pick up my old and broken microwave and broken 21" crt monitor, a 32kilo monster.
Put the 2 items out on the sidewalk the evening before like we have to do and not 15min later after going up my apartment to bring out the real trash, the 2 items were already gone, I was like "wtf? o.o"
Local trash collectors are seemingly everywhere.
And snakes ... uah, never touched or got close to one for real, but I dunno, I has the scaries for them ^^

Clarice is very nice! But okay, you can appreciate her from afar :3
Related to your story, I remember reading a story about a guy who, as a social experiment, filled a computer case with cement and left it on his porch to see what would happen. People would drag it a few feet before abandoning it, sometimes as far as the end of the street. Eventually someone took it. I kind of actually want to try this >.>
