As much as I LOVE this franchise, I'm not quite sure about that--I haven't played the last title (I don't even remember the name); but I did play the trilogy (really nice overall), Jak X: Combat Racing (maybe my all-time favorite console videogame) and "Daxter" (never liked the PSP controls, especially the analog pad).
Yeah, Naughty Dog does need to make another Jak and Daxter game. I read an interview a month ago with some ND staff that they tried to make a another J&D game before The Last of Us but given the new creative direction they're going with, a more realistic J&D game didn't work out. I hope they try again or go revisit their old creative direction.
